Reading and Writing
Xu Xiake, a famous geographer in the Ming Dynasty, became interested in books about different
places at an early age and wanted to travel. When he was 19, his father died and he had to take
care of his mother. However, Xu never gave up his dream of traveling.
With the support of his family, Xu set off for the first time at 22 and took four major trips in his
lifetime. In order to enjoy more first-hand experiences, he avoided comfortable travel options and
chose to go almost everywhere on foot, often carrying his luggage on his back. Although he
experienced all sorts of difficulties and hardships, Xu never thought of quitting.
Xu spent over 30 years traveling throughout the country, carefully studying the places he passed
through and recording his experiences and discoveries in his diary. Due to his devotion, the diary
eventually became The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake, which is well-known for its value in Chinese
geographic history.

Culture Understanding
Are You a Traveler or a Tourist?
A tourist is a person who travels for pleasure and a traveler is someone who experiences a trip in
depth(深入地). A tourist is someone who travels simply to see and a traveler is a person who
looks carefully, who observes with curiosity(好奇心), and who seeks to connect with the place he
/ she visits, with its history, its flavors(风味), and its people.
A tourist feels the need to get as much sightseeing(观光) as possible. The idea is that to visit a
place and experience it, you must visit buildings, museums and historic sites. Taking photographs
of yourself in these locations allows you to return home and show that you were there. A traveler,
on the other hand, does not need to rush. The really important thing is to go with the senses awake,
with a hunger to learn, to discover, to ask questions, and to be surprised by what may be found
along the way.
