fate and free will by Macbeth
Free Will Isn't Free
Could Macbeth choose his own path in life or is it already planned?
Everything he does in his life is already planned out. It is destined for
what happens happened in his life. He still has his free will, but no
matter what everything is bound to happen as it were destined to. His
destiny is still a step ahead of him. No matter what his decision is, even
the three witches can foretell his future. Every decision that Macbeth
choose was on his free will and his fate is already destined for him ahead
of times.
The three witches knew everything before hand. Therefore, they could
foretell who would be the destined one and be king. They knew the
exact time and place in which they were suppose to encounter the
future king. They knew Macbeth would be ordained to be this future
king. They told Macbeth that he was the Thane of Glamis because he is
the rightful heir "all hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Glamis!" [I, iii,
49], Thane of Cawdor all hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Tthane of Cawdor"
[I, iii, 51] and King of Scotland, "all hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king
hereafter!"[I, iii, 49]. They told Macbeth about the apparitions of the
signs that he would be overthrown off the throne. The first apparition
was Macduff "Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! Beware Macduff, Beware
the thane of Fife" [IV, I, 71]. The second apparition is foreshadowing that
nothing woman born shall kill him, "the pow'r of man, for none of
woman born shall harm Macbeth" [IV, I, 80]. While, the third apparition
telling Macbeth not to worry until the forest comes to him and the eight
kings overthrow him from the thrown. "Macbeth shall never vanquished
be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill shall come against
him" [IV, I, 92]. So the three witches already know Macbeths destiny and
his decisions.
When the witches told Macbeth that he was going to be king, he was not
patient enough to wait, hence, wanted for him to be king right then. He
discussed the ordeal to his wife about the three witches warning him
and how things started to take its course. His wife started planning evil
deeds that would get her husband Macbeth in hopes that he would be
thrown. Together they planned and killed the grooms and the King. They
also had Banquo killed because he was getting suspicious and was a
witness to Macbeth's evil deeds. In addition, Macbeth was afraid that
Banquo was going to ruin everything so he killed Banquo and tried to kill
Banquo son Fleance, but he got away and fled away. Macduff fled to
England leaving his family behind. Macbeth had people come and kill
Macduff's family, even the children "he has killed me, mother: run away,
I pray you!" [IV, iii, 84]. Macduff left his family making his wife think that
he was really a traitor and has deserted his family. When the witches
foretell Macbeth's future, they did not say anything about killing anyone.
It was Macbeth decision to kill everyone who was in his way and the
thrown.
The witches told him of all the ways that he could fail to keep his title as
king. They did that by the three apparitions. The first apparition was to
beware Macduff. Macduff does not have that much power but he could
bring powers together to take down Macbeth. The second apparition is
nothing that is born from a woman could take him down. But then
Macbeth should of thought about things more clearly, it is not what it
always seems like "fair is foul, and foul is fair." What Macbeth did not
know is that Macduff is not woman born. He was born by a saserial
section, also known as a "c-section." It is when you open up the woman's
abdomen to get the babe out. So ending up, Macduff does have the
power to take Macbeth off the thrown. The third apparition is when the
forest comes for Macbeth. Macbeths knows that forest can not move so
then he would always have his title as king. But then the forest did come
to him one day. Soldiers disguised with tree and branches together as a
forest moves closer to Macbeth. So the forest was moving in to
overthrow Macbeth. So everything is already destined to happen.
Macbeth's fate is already destined, even if it was his own free will to
choose his life, but his fate is already mapped out no matter what
decisions he makes. Macbeth's free will is his destiny. He can not change
his destiny even if he tried to change his evil actions. Even if he did not
kill, he would end up king and would be overthrown because he would
always have corrupted intentions. Whatever he does in his life, his
decisions or his actions, it is already destined to happen.
