England is the biggest of the four countries in the United Kingdom. Together with Scotland

and Wales, these three countries make up the island of Great Britain. When you include Northern

Ireland (the country in the northeastern part of Ireland), we call it the United Kingdom of Great

Britain and Northern Ireland (the UK). Over 50 million people live in England. That’s around 80

percent of the UK’s total population. It is a multicultural(多元文化的) country where more than

250 languages are spoken in the capital city of London. Outside of the big cities, England is a very

green country and has many beautiful rural(田园的) areas, such as the Lake District in the north

and the New Forest, a big area of forest in the southern part of the country.

English people love music. In summer, there are music festivals all over the country.

Glastonbury is a five-day festival of music, dance, comedy, theater and circus(马戏). About 175,000

people go to it each year. People in England listen to all types of music, especially pop and rock.

England has produced many international groups and singers like the Beatles.

The most popular sports in England are football, rugby and cricket. Most towns have at least one

field where teams can play. English football teams like Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool

are world-famous. Cricket is a traditional sport played with a bat and ball. It began in England and

is now played all over the world.

England is a very multicultural country and this has a big influence on the food people eat.

Indian, Chinese and Italian cuisines(饭菜) are popular besides traditional English food like fish and

chips, roast beef or sausage and mashed potatoes. Many English people drink several cups of tea

each day, usually with milk.

Do Not Believe Your Eyes

Ever since the Internet was invented, people have worried about

being cheated online. It is true that you can’t believe everything you see

or read on the Web. But what if that includes videos of people you know

and trust? This is one of the problems presented by “deepfakes” — fake

photos, audio recordings, or videos that are believable enough to make

you think that they’re real. Deepfake creators are able to make content that looks and sounds just

like your favorite movie stars, athletes, and even world leaders.

How does it work? Deepfake creators use software to analyze(分析) photographs and videos

of the target person from many angles(角度), according to CNBC. After this analysis, fake content

5

A. England: the Biggest Country in the UK

B. England: a Multicultural Country

C. England: a Modern Country with a Long History

can be created. The content is then examined several times for flaws(瑕疵) that might make it less

believable. These flaws are removed as soon as they’re found, eventually creating the perfect

deepfake.

You can probably already see how this could be dangerous. A deepfake of a world leader saying

something offensive(冒犯性的) or false about another country could lead to war. A deepfake of a

star saying something that is inappropriate(不合适的) could ruin(毁灭) their career. With social

media, it is easier than ever to spread deepfakes far and wide.

Anyone can find and use websites that allow them to create their own deepfakes, CNBC

reported. You can even make them on your mobile phone with some apps.

Researchers are trying to find ways to stop deepfakes. They are working on deepfake

detection(探测) software. Their software will be able to examine any video and figure out whether

it is a deepfake or not.

But of course, the best defense(防护) against any kind of misinformation — deepfake or

otherwise — is simple intuition(直觉) and skepticism(怀疑态度).

( )31. “Deepfakes” most probably refers to _______.

A. 换脸 B. 虚拟 C. 模仿

( )32. What do deepfake creators do before creating fake content?

A. Analyze photos and videos of the target person.

B. Take photos and videos of the target person.

C. Examine the content for flaws.

( )33. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Deepfakes can trick us by making us think that fake videos are real.

B. The content of a deepfake is examined many times after being created tomake

it perfect.

C. A deepfake of a star saying something offensive about another country could

ruin world peace.

( )34. What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?

A. How to develop detection software.

B. How to examine deepfake videos.

C. How to stop deepfakes.

( )35. How can we best stop deepfakes?

A. By using different kinds of detection software.

B. By making laws to defend against deepfake creators.

6

C. By following our intuition and being skeptical.

III.语篇补全(共4小题,计8分)

Self-disciplined(自律的) people are not all outstanding people, but nearly all outstanding

people are self-disciplined people. Some of them read every day. Some of them never run late. The

real difference between an elite(精英) person and a common person is that an elite person can

manage his or her time well. 36.__________________ What people call self-discipline is in fact

self-management(自我管理).

One example is staying fit. Never underestimate(低估) someone who is in good shape. Anyone

who has ever tried to lose weight knows that it’s not easy. 37.__________________ If someone is

in good shape, it shows that he knows the principles(原则) of staying fit and is able to stick to a

plan that uses these principles. If someone is in good shape, it means that this person is good at

managing themselves and their time. It also shows that this person is able to keep persevering(坚定不移的) and can balance(平衡) long-term goals with short-term goals. So if someone is in good

shape, 38.__________________

39.__________________? First of all, set a goal and write down your reasons for wanting to

achieve it. Create a list of all the things you need to do to achieve this goal and start to work on them

one at a time. With self-discipline, small things in life will no longer trouble you. Only through self-discipline can you truly own your future.

A. How do you learn self-management

B. That’s where their success comes from

C. he or she must be an outstanding person

D. It’s even harder to avoid putting weight back on

E. he or she is way more than just healthy

Anna Du was walking along the beach when she noticed plastics there. She reached down to

pick them up, and quickly realized that it was impossible to clean them all 12-year-old girl

then tried to solve the problem like any good scientist — first, by doing a little research. That’s how

she learned that about 8 million tons of plastics end up in the oceans every year. Then she started

building something that could help solve the problem: a remote-operated vehicle(遥控潜水器), or

ROV. Her ROV can move through water to find plastics on the ocean floor. Du started attending

public events and workshops(研讨会) at a university when she was five, and so she picked up the

engineering skills necessary to build her ROV. She says actually getting her ROV to move through

7

water well was not easy. She failed many times, but she never gave up trying and testing.

Du thanks her parents, who for years have taken her to student outreach activities(宣传活动),

for supporting her interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). She says she has

been able to meet students and scientists there.

“I know I want to be an engineer because I like building things to help solve world

problems, ”says Du. “But I’m not sure what kind of engineer I want to be yet.”

40. When did Du start to do a little research to solve the problem?
