You may have known several kinds of police, traffic police,

and street police. But have you

ever heard of energy-saving policemen ?

A group of 22 of these new policemen went to work some

years ago in Beijing. They go around the city to see the use of

energy in hotels, office buildings, shopping centers and other

public places. One of their aims is to make sure that these sites

have set their air conditioning no cooler than 26℃.

They also set up a special phone line so that people can tell

them which buildings fail to follow the rule.

“If everyone sets their air conditioning at 26℃, Beijing will

save 400 million kilowatt-hours of electricity in one summer.

That’s one-third of all the usage of the city in the season,”said

a TV advertisement.

Other Chinese cities, like Wuhan in Hubei Province and

Yangzhou in Jiangsu Province, are going to follow Beijing’s

steps in setting up a similar police team.

As one of the fastest developing countries, China is using a

lot of energy. This has a great effect on the country’s

environment and limited energy.

From 1986 to 2005, the country experienced 20 warm winters

continuously. Numbers show that Chinese cities have to spend

billions of yuan solving environmental problems every year.

At the beginning , China made its first action plan to fight

pollution. It aims to reduce energy usage by 20% and increase

renewable energy up to 10% from 7% by 2010.

To introduce the public to a green life, last week Beijing held

a show on energy-saving technology and productions.

Environment-friendly machines, such as a vending machine(自动售货机) that helps collect used bottles, have attracted lots of

attention.

“We want to tell people that there are certain ways to

protect the environment. Each of us can find your own ways to

do it in our daily lives,”said Liu Qianguang, an environmental

engineer in Beijing.

Sometimes children do not do what their parents tell them

to do. When this happens, a parent tries to help the child to do

the right thing. When this does not work, the parent usually

punishes the child.

There are many things that a parent can do. One thing that

people have done is to spank the child. When a parent spanks a

child, they will use their hand or a hard object to strike them on

their bottom. This is meant to show the child that they have done

something wrong.

One parent remembers being spanked when he was a child.

His parents used a wooden spoon. When he spanked his own

children with his hand, he saw that he put a red mark on his

child’s leg. He never did that again.

One problem with spanking is that it teaches the children to

hit someone when they do not like what the other person is

doing. Another problem with spanking is that the parent is

usually angry and can hit the child too hard. Sometimes parents

will use spanking for everything and not try other ways to get the

child to do the right thing.

Many parents are not sure of what to do instead of spanking.

Some people think that their religion(宗教) tells them that

spanking is okay. Some think that the law lets them do it. The

courts(法院) say that parents have the right to teach their children

how to behave.

Other things should be tried before a parent decides to

spank a child. Telling the child exactly what is wanted from them

can be one thing. Giving a child more than one choice is another

thing that can be tried. Getting down to the child’s level and

taking a more child-friendly approach(方法) can help as well.

Recently a famous primary school in Nanjing has called on

parents to stop yelling(吼) at children for a month. Many parents

think it difficult to keep a peaceful mind when teaching children,

especially when children are disobedient. Maybe what parents

need exactly is just deep breath before they decide to yell at or

spank children.

ing to the passage, when children do something

wrong, one thing that parents usually

B. try to help them do the right thing

of the following can best describe the writer’s

attitude(态度) towards spanking?

A. favorable(赞同的)

B. Unfavorable

C. interested

D. indifferent(漠不关心的)

no cars! These modern car-free zones are really popular and

people like shopping there.

In the past, Bogota was polluted because there was lots of

traffic. Now the downtown area

is car-free and the air is clean. Many people don’t have a

Every student can manage time to get good grades at school.

However, how can you manage your time more efficiently (有效地) to study well? Well, you can arrange for time each day to read

over notes. You needn’t study each of your subjects every day,

but studying something every day will help you improve your

grades. Take notes as you study, so you can use those notes to

shorten your study time later. Even though studying is important,

it doesn’t need to control your time.

After-school activities are an important part of school life for

many students. The journey toward good grades doesn’t mean

you have to give up these activities. Instead, you need to find

your personal balance between study time and after-school

activities. For example, if you play

on the baseball team and work on the school paper, you may

find that two activities are too much, and that you don’t have

enough time to study and take part in these activities. If this is

the

case, you need to prioritize (区分优先次序) and choose just

one activity. Therefore, you’ll have time to study.

As you get closer to graduation(毕业), it becomes easier to

think that class attendance isn’t important, especially later in

college. Other activities, such as hanging out(聚集) with friends

and even working, can feel more important. However, class time

is the time when you can ask questions and learn more about the

material. Attending your classes regularly makes you get more

information and helps you get better grades.

Spending time with your friends and taking part in fun

activities are still important; however, you must evaluate (评估)

each situation and learn when to say “no” to going out to have

fun. For example, if you have a big test the next day, it’s more

important for you to stay home and study. However, if the test

isn’t for a few more days, it won’t hurt to go out for one or

two hours. Each person can spend some time in having fun.

Any spare time you have during the day can be used for

studying. For example, if you ride the bus, use that time to read

over your notes, or read your text. Any time in which you would

just sit and wait is a good time to work on school work, so you

can improve your grades. However, you need to learn to balance

school work and relaxation time, so you don’t burn out.

B)根据短文内容及首字母提示,填写所缺单词。

Do you know someone who is looking for a

Hatchimal? If you do not, you probably will soon. A

Hatchimal is a small, soft toy that comes inside

a plastic egg. Hatchimals are very p 66 with

children this holiday season.

The owner are supposed to

d k 68 it warm. After a while, th

Hatchimals are able to move and light up. They can a 69 play

simple games and repeat sounds mady by the owner.

Hatchimals arrived in stores across the United States in

October. S 70 then, Americans have been buying them as holiday

gifts for children. Each one sells for about $60.

But some people predicted(预言) the plaything() would be a

fashionable gift this year. Those wise people bought several

Hatchimals. They are now reselling them at three or four times

the price.

A lot of parents w 71 hope to buy the playthings as gifts are

not happy about that. There are stories of parents sleeping out

of stores that claim(声称) to have Hatchimals for sale, only to find

out that very few are actually available.

A news reporter collected

stories from over the weekend. One New York woman

reportedly waited outside a store from 11:30 at night until 8:00

the next m 72 . She was the seventh person in line. The store let

the people in front of her buy two toys each. The store only had

12 for sale, so she missed out. The woman said her 8-year-old

child will not be h 73 this Christmas.

Some people are reacting on social media to the stories. One

woman in Manchester, England posted on Facebook in

November. She said the toy was not w 74 the money, and once

her children played with her gift for a few hours, they did not

want to play with it again.

A 75 mother left a comment(评论) saying her son was bored

with the toy after a while.

She said she plans to make him remember Hatchimals the

next time he says “Mom, I need that toy.”六.书面表达(满分15分)
