Age has never been a problem for 16-year-old Thessalonika Arzu-Embry.

After all, she’s already got her master’s degree.

The North Chicago-area teen started homeschooling at the age of 4. She

began having an influence on others soon after. When she was 6 years old, she

could have deadly results once the plane takes off -- a topic that has been in

the news lately. For her, it’s a mix of two of her interests.

In her free time, Thessalonika enjoys playing tennis, swimming and being

active in her youth group at church. She also has three self-published books,

Most kinds of rose plants come from Asia. But roses are also native to

other areas including northwest Africa, Europe and the United States. Some

people say roses are difficult to grow. But you have a good chance of success if

you start with a few suggestions from experts.

You should plant your roses where they can get sunshine for about six

hours on bright days. You can buy roses from a garden center or by mail order.

You can buy potted(盆栽)roses, also known as container roses, or bare-root(裸根)plants. Each kind has its fans.

Some gardeners say potted roses are easier to plant. They say the roots

develop better. But Jeffrey Dinslage, president of Nature Hills Nursery in

Omaha, Nebraska, points out that bare-root roses come without soil. So they

weigh less to transport. If they arrive before you are ready to plant them, make

sure the packing material is slightly wet. Keep the plants in a cool, dark place.

You plant the roses while they are not active. The resting plants have no leaves

but still need water.

When growing roses, the soil should be wet. Watering should be done in

the morning. That can prevent problem called black spots. But do not water

too much. Jeffrey Dinslage says people often ask him about becoming

discolored on rose leaves. He says the problems are usually caused by too

much water. After heavy rains or too much watering, he advises pulling away

mulch(覆盖物) from around the roots for a short time. This will help dry the

soil. If your soil is very dry, you can add compost, which returns nutrients(营养)to the soil.

Life often requires people to join in unpleasant situations. Rather often,

these unpleasant situations do not happen on their own, but happen because

of other people’s actions and words. Fortunately, there are useful ways to

deal with conflicts.

The best way to solve a conflict is not to let it happen. Nothing useful

comes out of a conflict. It is a total waste of time and energy for both sides and

thus everyone should try his best to prevent conflict. To do this, you will need

to learn the points of view your potential opponents share and the benefits

of understanding people around you.

If the conflict has already arisen, one of the best methods to settle

disagreements is to treat the situation with humor. It does not mean, however,

that you must ignore(忽视) your opponent’s arguments and make jokes

about them; it means that you should be in a friendly atmosphere, saying

difficult-to-express things with a bit of humor. Humor will help you reduce

anger and re-think problems to make them look easier to settle, and set your

opponent’s mind to working on a problem with you, not against you. This

way, a conflict can become an opportunity for building a greater connection

between you and your opponent.

If the situation turns verbally abusive , put a stop to it. Firmly but calmly

state: “You’re very angry right now and you’re saying things you don’t

mean. I’m going to excuse myself. We can talk again after you calm down.”

Then leave the room or ask them to leave.

(1)What can we learn about conflict prevention(预防)?

A . It does good to both sides.B . It provides a better solution.C . It results

in verbal arguments.D . It causes some misunderstandings.

(2)How can you deal with your opponent with humor?

A . Play a trick on him.B . Laugh at him seriously.C . Overlook his angry

words.D . Explain to him amusingly.

(3)What will you do when you are under verbal attack from a man?

A . Say sorry and leave him.B . Make an excuse to end it.C . Put the man

beneath his dignity.D . Deal with him as he deals with you.

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the

public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more

way for her to solve my strange problem—inability to read.

In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I sat down

on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf. The cover of a book caught

my eye. It presented a picture of a dog. I had recently had a dog, the first and

only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but later

he was given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for

him. I never forget my dog.

There on the book’s cover was a dog which looked the same with my

dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran

across the title, Amos, the Dog with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title.

Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for summer.

Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very

slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of

the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and

who finally found his way back home. At the end of the story, my mind

continued the final scene of reunion. When I finished my reading, a stream of

tears ran down my checks. It was until then I realized that I have overcome my

inability to read. Thus, this was the very first book for me which I had read

through and deeply immersed in real sense.
