If our kids don’t fall, they don’t learn to get up. I still remember the day in high school

that my mom forgot to pick me up from school. I’m the oldest of four children, and no doubt

she’d had a long day with the other kids and it’d slipped her mind. After waiting at school

for an hour, I walked the three miles home, and when I got to my house, I shut our front door

with anger, stormed into the kitchen and screamed in my mom’s face that she’d forgotten me.

Later that night, my dad told me I no longer had a ride to school the next day. I figured

my mom would still take me, but when the morning came, she refused. It was midterm, and

as a straight-A student ready to start college applications, being late wasn’t an option. In my

mind, missing these tests would have been the end of my academic career. I begged my mom.

I told her she was ruining my future and everything I’d worked for. But she held her ground,

C.Teaching. D.Payment

and that day, I walked to school. And I missed my tests.

My mom didn’t rescue me from failure. She let me suffer from it. She let me figure it

out. She let me learn. Now, as a mom myself, I’ve realized that I want my kids to experience

failure because failure is how we grow, learn and think outside of ourselves. It’s how we self-educate to learn what’s right and respectable, and what’s not. It’s how we become responsible

and enthusiastic. Falling down makes us better because we learn how to get up.

is one of the reasons that the author got angry that day?

A.She was tired.

C.She was late for school.

B.She failed in a test.

D.She had to walk home by herself.

does the author feel about her childhood experience?

A.Terrible. B.Meaningful. C.Embarrassing. D.Colorful.

underlined phrase “held her ground” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.

C.My Love for Mother

Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your

home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make

your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home

into part of your diet plan.

Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to

encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious when they’re in poorly lit

places—and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesn’t have enough window

B.The Value of Failure

D.Failure in My Life

B.said yes to me

D.kept to her idea

light, get more lights and flood the place with brightness.

Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people

who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room.

Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel

less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.

Don’t forget the clock—or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70

fewer calories(卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping

track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while you’re at it,

actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It

makes you less likely to rush through a meal.

Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about

22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a

large spoon over a smaller one, total intake (摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about

30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.

text is especially helpful for those who care about ____________.

A. their home comforts B. their body shape

C. house buying D. healthy diets

29.A home environment in blue can help people ______________.

A. digest food better B. reduce food intake.

C. burn more calories D. regain their appetites

are people advised to do at mealtimes?

A. Eat quickly. B. Play fast music.

C. Use smaller spoons. D. Turn down the lights.

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is

nothing fixed about attitudes to dirt.

In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out

disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin

and let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French

king had closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus

began a long time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way.

Henry IV, king of France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a man had taken a bath, the

king ordered that, to avoid the attack of disease, the man should not go out.

Though the belief in the merit(优点) of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been

regarded as a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning

away dirt is good to health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of

preventing disease. Yet, it seems that standards of cleanliness have moved beyond science

since World War II. Advertisements repeatedly sell the idea: clothes need to be whiter than

white, cloths ever softer, surfaces to shine. Has the hate for dirt, however, gone too far?

Attitudes to dirt still differ hugely nowadays. Many first-time parents nervously try to

warn their children off touching dirt, which might be responsible for the spread of disease.

On the contrary, Mary Ruebush, an American immunologist(免疫学家), encourages children

to play in the dirt to build up a strong immune system. And the latter position is gaining some

ground.

kings of France and England in the 16th century closed bath houses because

_________ .

A. they lived healthily in a dirty environment.

B. they thought bath houses were too dirty to stay in.

C. they considered bathing as cause of skin disease.

D. They believed disease could be spread in public baths.

of the following best describes Henry IV’s attitude to bathing?

A. Curious B. Afraid C. Approving D.Uninterested

does the passage mainly develop?

A. By following the order of time. B. By making comparison.

C. By providing examples D. By following the order of importance.

is the author’s purpose in writing the passages?

A. To call attention to the danger of dirt.

B. To introduce the history of dirt.

C. To show the change of views on dirt.

D. To stress the role of dirt.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Everyone wants to be nice to their own pets! Here are a few tips.

Feed them not too little, but not too much either. You have to tell the difference between

the times they’re hungry and the times they’re just trying to get food. Clean their food and

drink bowls at least once a day. 36 You wouldn’t eat off the same plate for one whole

week or drink out of the same glass for a month!

37 Pets want as much of your attention as possible, dogs especially. In general,

admit your pets’ existence; even say “Hi, how are you doing?” Clearly they won’t understand

what you’re saying, but it shows that you care for them.

Take dogs on walks. Most dogs don’t like to be kept in a house all day long.

38 They can also meet other dogs this way. Dogs like the company of other dogs.

Take them to the vet regularly. Your pet may not like it. 39 Reward it once in a

while and he will be happy with what he gets.

If you had to take your dog to the hospital, he might be afraid of riding in cars. 40

Your dog will finally realize that not all car rides end at the hospital.

A. Ask others to share.

B. It’s the same with us.

C. Give your pets attention.

D. Make sure it has a warm place to live in.

E. They like to get out and enjoy the fresh air.

F. In that case, take very short car rides that lead somewhere pleasant.

G. But it’s better to cause a little discomfort now than to find out later that it has a disease.

First of all,I quite understand how you feel now. I want to say failure is the mother of

success. So never give up though you failed this time. You should try to analyze the cause

and draw a lesson for it. This can help you make up for the shorts of knowledge and skills in

those areas. The next is to build up confidence, for it is the deciding factor to ideal grade.

I am sure by doing this your test results will be improved next time and gradually your

confidence will also come back. Hope everything goes well with you and looking forward to

your reply.
