My wife and I usually don’t keep houseplants. But after I was told I had cancer I wanted

to be around some life. When my friend Mitch gave me a lucky bamboo plant in a bowl, we

decided to place the plant next to the living room window across from the couch.

I told Hannah I wanted to care for the plant myself. When it didn’t immediately turn

yellow or brown or lose all of its leaves, I was pleasantly surprised. Tending to the plant gave

me a sense of achievement at a time when I sometimes felt useless. As a doctor, I was used to

being the one who provided care, not the one who received it. Watering the plant taught me I

couldstill be a caregiver.

Over the next few months, I recovered from surgery and completed the first round of

chemotherapy(化疗). Even after I returned to work, I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it

had nearly doubled in height and its leaves were shiny and lush Both the tree and I were

healthy.

Then, mysteriously, it began to show signs of stress. No matter what I did, the leaves kept

browning and dropping to the floor. I grew more and more frustrated and uneasy.

“I can’t even care for a simple plant!” I yelled. “I’m failing!“ I couldn’t shake the feeling

that the plant had become a symbol of my own health. I realized I had wrongly connected my

careful caring for the plant-something over which I had at least some control-with my own

survival something over which I had no control.

When my tumor(肿瘤) returned, it would not be because of any failure on my part. As

my anxiety decreased, I began to research how to heal the plant. After moving it under a

sunny window, we both began to thrive again.

Whenever I look at the tree in its new pot, I think of Mitch and all the people who

supported me. If the plant outlives me, I hope it will comfort Hannah and remind her that our

We’ve all been told that different types of fruits and vegetables have different benefits

that help us keep healthy. A new international study has found that eating one fruit regularly

can help reduce the risk of cancer (癌症), among those people who have a high risk of

developing certain cancers.

The research, which followed almost 1,000 patients with a variety of cancers, found that

taking regular resistant starch (抗酶解淀粉) could have a great preventative effect on the risk

of cancer. Here’s what you need to know about how eating bananas regularly can help reduce

the risk of cancers.

Resistant starch is found in green bananas. By eating green bananas your body gets

resistant starch, which has been found to reduce the risk of cancers in some parts of the body

by more than a half, according to the new research. The study, which was published in Cancer

Prevention Research, was led by experts at the Universities of Newcastle and Leeds. It found

that resistant starch, if taken regularly for two years, had a very good effect on some cancers,

which can be difficult to find.

John Mathers, a professor at Newcastle University explained, “Resistant starch really

helps in fact, which has several health benefits and fewer calories than regular starch.”

In addition to green bananas, resistant starch is also found in foods such as peas, beans

and other starchy foods. In terms of bananas, experts think that eating one banana every day

has the same effect as a certain amount of resistant starch. The secret is to eat the bananas

before they become too ripe (成熟的) or soft.

Starting this fall, primary and middle school students in China will have at least one

weekly course on labor education, according to a new curriculum standard released by the

Ministry of Education (MOE).

Labor education ranges from household chores to on-campus labor and community

volunteer services, generally 3 types according to the new standards: the first refers to

everyday chores, including cleaning, organizing, cooking, and using and maintaining home

appliances (家电); next is productive labor, including agriculture, making traditional

handicrafts (手工艺品), and applying new technologies such as 3D printing; the third type is

service work, including volunteer work. The new curriculum also calls for a week of

extra-curricular and off-campus activities designed for labor education once every school

year.

A recent study showed that primary and middle school students in China only spend an

average of 12 minutes a day on chores, compared to 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in

South Korea and 30 minutes in France. Many countries start students’ labor education at a

young age. Finland begins to develop students’ life skills in primary school. Spinning,

woodworking, cooking and other craftsmanship classes are offered. In Germany, pupils have

two labor classes per week. Electronics, office technology, sewing, housekeeping, and career

guidance are all taught there.

Adding labor education was out of concern that the country’s youngsters do too little

housework and look down on manual labor (体力劳动) jobs. Due to great academic pressure,

schools tend to put their academic curricula on the top, and parents sometimes see household

chores as distractions. But, according to the MOE, labor education must be strengthened to

help students develop social values, an interest in labor and finally an all-around

development.

12.What is the purpose of adding labor education?

A.To enrich the students’ off-campus life.

B.To improve the students’ performance on learning.

C.To help students achieve an all-around development.

D.To follow the education mode of some western countries.

13.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.The history of labor education.

B.The content of labor education.

C.The significance of labor education.

D.The future development of labor education.

14.What does labor education in Finland and Germany have in common?

A.They start labor education in the middle school.

B.There are a wide variety of labor education courses.

C.It is viewed more important than academic learning.

D.Students spend more than 30 minutes on housework daily.

If you hope to improve your health, exercise is obviously a good way. But do you know

that it has great effects on the mind too? We often pay little attention to the great mental

benefits that exercising regularly can have. It will allow you to stay active and healthy for a

long time, allowing you to have both the physical and mental (身心的) benefits. 16

Improve your mood (心情) . Exercise is just what you need if you’re looking for some

positive feelings. It is possible that you have experienced a happy time after exercise. While

you are exercising, “happiness hormones (荷尔蒙)” are released. 17

Reduce stress. If you’re feeling stressed, this feeling will disappear after exercise. 18

Because it helps reduce the level of the “stress hormone” which leaves you feeling tired and

stressed.

19 If you take regular exercise, you’ll find the results last longer too. So over

time, you’ll have a higher ability to stay focused while completing tasks if you exercise

regularly.

Improve your memory. According to a study by the University of British Columbia,

regular exercise increases the size of the hippocampus (a part of the brain). 20

One Saturday morning, I got a call from my aunt. She told me that she had to go with

my uncle on a business trip for the day, and she wondered if I could look after my little

6-year-old cousin, Max. I knew that for them, leaving their dearest son for a day was the last

thing in the whole world they would do, because they were what is known as “helicopter

parents”, who keep watching everything their kids do.

As a high school student, I knew

exactly that children who were brought up by helicopter parents could end up having many

problems and I hoped I could do something to improve the situation, so I accepted her request.

试卷第9页,共10页

Actually, I was honored to be trusted by such parents.

When I arrived there, my aunt and uncle were just ready to go out. The last thing my

aunt said to me before they left was “Don’t let him hurt himself while we are away.” She

repeated it several times until she thought I took it seriously. After they left, I tried to teach

Max to play some games that might be against my aunt’s will, but failed. Max seemed not to

be interested, and even frightened. I didn’t want to push him, so I decided to slow it down.

Around lunch time, Max asked me what was for lunch. I said, “I don’t know, what do

you want?” He said, “Can you cook scrambled eggs?” I replied, “Of course I can!” “Well,”

said Max, “I want some.” I asked him if he could cook. He looked at me in amazement, and

said, “Of course not. Mom won’t allow me to approach the kitchen. She thinks I’ll be burnt if

I try to do that, but I think it would be amazing to cook what I like on my own.”

Paragraph 1:

Suddenly, I had an idea.
