As a young man,Al was a skilled artist. He had a wife and two fine

sons. One night, his oldest son developed a stomachache. Thinking

it was only some common illness, neither Al nor his wife took the

condition very seriously. But the illness became serious, and the

boy died suddenly that night.

Knowing the death could have been prevented if he had only

realized the seriousness of the situation,Al’s emotional health was

weakened under the effect of his guilt. To make matters worse, his

wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six year

old younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were

more than Al could handle, and he began to take in a lot of alcohol

and became an alcoholic.

As the alcoholism progressed,Al began to lose everything he

had—his home,his land,his art objects,everything. Eventually Al

died alone in a San Francisco motel room.

When I heard of Al’s death,I thought he was a loser because he

ended his life with nothing material to show for it.

As time went by,I began to change my judgment. You see,I knew

Al’s now adult son,Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, most loving men I have ever known. I watched Ernie with his

children and saw the free flow of love between them. I knew that

kindness and caring had to come from somewhere.

One day,Ernie told me,“From my earliest memories as a child until

I left home at 18,my dad came into my room every night, gave me

a kiss and said,‘I love you,son.’”

Tears came to my eyes as I realized what a fool I had been to judge

Al as a failure. He had not left any material possessions behind. But

men I have ever known.

probably mean

A. It refers to a person who has lost his children.

D. It refers to a person who has mental diseases.

30. What has become of Al’s second son Earnie

A. He has a kind and loving heart.

C. He himself is now an alcoholic too.

D. He also has an unhappy family.

31. From the passage, we can learn that _____.

A. taking any disease seriously is really important

B. love and kindness can pass on to the next generation

C. it is not good to judge others easily

D. emotional health can affect one’s life

One of the hardest things in life is sticking to a healthy diet. Experts

recommend you plan your meals in advance, so you aren’t

attracted when faced with less-than-healthy choices. It’s said that

the average American eats almost 25 percent of their daily calories

from snacking(零食) alone, and snacking is the leading cause of

childhood obesity.

Therefore, there are two choices: Stop snacking (hard) or snack

healthier (simple). But, for many of us, telling apart what’s “healthy”

and how much to consume(消耗) are two different things. But, if

you don’t keep the amount in check it can seriously ruin your diet.

It’s easy to consume double or triple the amount. If you’re

struggling to keep you and your family’s snacking under control,

you may be interested in the new online store called , offering a

new service delivered right to your front door on a monthly basis.

After you sign up on their website and provide some information

about your taste preferences and anything else, the company

sends you a box every month containing a delicious selection of

healthy snack foods. A box includes 12-15 servings across 4 to 5

different NatureBox snacks—enough to last you and your family

for a month.

Each box costs just under $20 and shipping is always free.

NatureBox is meant to fit your lifestyle by providing you with

snacks you’ll enjoy and look forward to eating. You can easily order

what you want to receive based on the snacks you love most. And

now, NatureBox is offering an immediate 25% off their first order.

Just enter the code “livehealthy” when you join.

32. We can learn from the passage that _____.

A. Almost 25 percent of Americans’ daily calories are from snacking.

B. NatureBox is the name of a new kind of healthy snacking.

C. It is easy for people to control their amount of snacking in daily

life.

D. Snack boxs from NatureBox are given to the customers for free.

33. What does the underlined part “in check” in Paragraph 2

probably mean

A. in danger. B. in control. C. in need. D. in store.

34. What is true about NatureBox

A. NatureBox is a snack box given by the government free of

charge.

B. Each box from NatureBox costs more than $20 .

C. NatureBox is an online store which sells healthy snacks.

D. A box from NatureBox contains snacks for a family to eat for a

year.

35. The passage is mainly about_____.

A. the unhealthy eating habits of Americans

B. the development of healthy snacks in America

C. a way of keeping a healthy diet

D. a company that sells healthy snacks

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Most people believe they don’t have much imagination. 36

Everyone has imagination, but most of us, once we become adults,

forget how to make use of it. Creativity isn’t always connected with

great works of art or ideas. People at work and in their free time

deeply think of creative ways to solve problems. Maybe you have a

goal to achieve, a tricky question to answer or you just want to

expand your mind! 37

Making connections. This technique involves taking unrelated ideas

and trying to find links between them. First, think about the

problem you have to solve or the job you need to do. Then find an

image, word, idea or object, for example, a candle. Write down all

the idea/words associated with candles: light, fire, matches, wax,

night, silence, etc. Think of as many as you can. 38 So imagine you

want to but a friend an original present; you could buy him tickets

to match or take him out for the night.

39 Imagine that normal limitations don’t exist. You have as much

time/space/money, etc. as you want. Think about your goal and the

new possibilities. If your goal is to learn to ski, for example, you can

now practise skiing every day of your life (because you have the

time and the money). Now adapt this to reality. Maybe you can

practise skiing every day in December, or every Monday in January.

Be someone else! 40 Look at the situation from a different point of

view. Good businessmen use this technique in trade, and so do

writers. Fiction writers often imagine they are the characters in their

books. They ask question: What does this character want Why can’t

she get it What changes must she make to get what she wants The

best fishermen think like fish!

A. The next stage is to relate the ideas to the job you have to do.

B. They are wrong.

C. If your goal involves other people, put yourself in their positions.

D. Here are three techniques to help you.

E. A good writer always visits as many people as possible.

F. Practice makes perfect!

G. No limits!

第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分, 满分15分)

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Happiness, according to the Oxford English dictionary, is based on

luck or good fortune. Joy , 56 the other hand, is described as an

emotion of pleasure. Thus, happiness depends on circumstance ,

joy, on our emotional well-being.

If you know joyful people, you will probably notice something

common among them. Joyful people are often healthy, both 57

(physical)and mentally; they value strong positive relationships,

and they don’t allow the extremes of life -- sudden highs or

sudden lows -- to influence them too much. Joyful people lead a

more stable(稳定的) life. But these 58 (ability)do not just arrive;

they have to be worked at.

59 (teach )ourselves to be joyful may be one of the greatest things

we can do to improve our overall health. 60 , it is important to

understand that joy is an emotion that arises from within us and is

not affected by the things that happen to us. Instead of 61

(look)for external (外部的) things to provide happiness in our lives,

we must work hard to find the joy within. Joy can be 62 (find) in

our daily lives, so we must educate ourselves about joy and work to

achieve it. One way to start is to make 63 decision to wake up

every morning and find joy in our lives. Think about a special

person or a 64 (devote) pet. It is our choice to be joyful or fearful.

Let’s take the time to train ourselves to be joyful -- our lives will be

both happier and 65 (healthy) for it.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was April 5th, a lovely spring morning. The air was fresh . The

trees were green and the birds were singing happily. Police officer

Tidwell left the station just after on such a beautiful morning.

He had spent a boring night on duty and was looking forward to

his day of rest. By habit he took a short-cut down the path behind

Dugby Hall road . It was quiet at this time of a day. Tidwell walked

slowly ,enjoying the fresh morning air. But after a minute or two he

saw a man climbing down a drainpipe (雨水管) from an open

bedroom window of Number 29. In silence, Tidwell crept into the

garden. Tidwell watched for a while and waited for the man to

climb down slowly off the wall. The man reached the ground and

was dusting himself down when he felt his arm caught.

“It’s 8:15 on a Sunday morning,” said the officer, “and this sort of

thing seems an unlikely adventure at such a time. Would you mind

explaining ” Tidwell spoke with a serious voice of a police officer,

holding the man tightly at the same time.

The man was obviously scared. He struggled for a while and then

said, “I know what you are thinking, officer, but it isn’t true. This is a

funny mistake.”

Tidwell did not believe his words at all but he said to the man, “It’s

part of my job to take an interest in unusual events. I think you’ve

just left this house in a manner other than the customary one. That

may be quite innocent, but I’d like to make sure.” Tidwell took out

his notebook and a pen. “Name, address and occupation and then,

please, tell me ”

“Charlie Crane, lorry driver, from Nottingham, 51 Breton Street. My

story…”

“Yes. What were you doing like a fly on that wall, Mr. Crane ”
