Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between High School Summer College and a
summer camp
Stanford’s High School Summer College is an academically selective
program that provides access to college education at one of America’s
most respected universities. Summer College is not a camp, but an
eight-week college experience that provides academic, social, and
intellectual opportunities that cannot be found in a high school
classroom.
What kind of student are you looking for
We are looking for academically motivated high school students who are
ready for a college experience. This doesn’t mean an applicant needs the
highest test scores in their class, but we do need evidence that a student
enjoys learning, understands how to be successful in an academically
rigorous (严格的)educational environment, and is prepared to be in a
college classroom.
Can I get a job to earn money during my time at Stanford
High School Summer College students are expected to participate fully in
our program. In addition to class time and study time, there are many

the summer experience, our students should be completely involved in
all aspects of the program. High School Summer College students will
receive no permission to work during their time on campus.
Can I leave campus while I’m there for the summer
The Program Handbook details information about the question. High
School Summer College students should not miss class for any reason.
There is a strict school rule requiring all program participants to be at the

Britons are well known for the amount of tea that they drink. The
average person in the UK consumes around 1.9 kg of tea yearly. That’s
around 876 cups of tea. Tea is drunk by all sections of society. But tea is
not native to Britain. Most tea is grown in India and China. So, how did it
become an important part of British culture
Tea arrived in London in the 1600s. At this time, British ships were
exploring the world and came across the drink in China. It was not long
before green tea was available to buy. However, this was only available
to the richer sections of society.
At the beginning of the 1700s, the amount of tea arriving in Britain
increased gradually. Black tea arrived at this time. At first people drank
this tea exactly as it was in China. They soon discovered that it mixed
really well with a little milk and sugar, giving the drink a special British
characteristic.
In the 1800s tea was still a product enjoyed only by people with money.
At this time they began to have “afternoon tea”. This involves drinking
tea with a snack around 4 pm to avoid feeling hungry between lunch and
dinner. It is a tradition that is still going today but has become less
第 10 页 共 21 页
popular in recent times.
In the late 1800s, the price of tea decreased sharply as more tea began
to arrive on ships from India and China. It was no longer a drink just for
rich people. Tearooms — shops where you could buy and drink tea —
started to appear across the country. People enjoyed drinking tea and
socialising in these places. At the start of the 20th century, Britons began
to make tea in their homes whenever they felt like it. Kettles became
necessary in every kitchen.

For years, doctors have given blood to patients who need it to survive.
These transfusions usually include giving red blood cells to patients.
Blood transfusions aren’t as simple as taking blood from one person and
giving it to someone else. There’re several different blood types that
don’t all mix well. If someone gets a transfusion of the wrong kind of
blood, their body will reject the blood cells, causing problems. For the
first time ever, scientists from the University of Bristol, Britain, are
carrying out a new trail: testing red blood cells grown in a laboratory on
human volunteers. The scientists have used stem cells (干细胞) from a
blood sample to grow billions of brand new red blood cells.
This could be even better than a regular blood transfusion. For one thing,
they can be adjusted for people with different blood types. That’ll be
extremely helpful for people with rare blood types. Also, a normal
transfusion has red blood cells of all different ages, which means only a
small part of them are brand new. The red blood cells grown in the lab
are brand new, and this means they last longer and that patients will
need fewer transfusions.
To test its safety, researchers have given a couple of teaspoons of the
blood to two healthy people, both of whom seem to be doing just fine
第 12 页 共 21 页
after the transfusions. In all, they’ll be tested on 10 people, and
compared to normal transfusions. The new process doesn’t indicate that
normal blood transfusions will disappear. Meanwhile, growing red blood
cells in a lab is extremely expensive. And a lot of work and testing still
need to be done. But if it’s successful, the process could make life much
easier for patients who often need transfusions—even those with rare
blood types.
32. Why are the scientists carrying out the research
A. The blood reserve is not adequate.
B. Normal blood transfusions are out of date.
C. More and more people need blood transfusions.
D. They want to find a new trail of blood transfusions.
33. What’s the advantages of the brand new red blood cells grown in the
lab
A. They suit the patients of all different ages.
B. They have red blood cells from different races.
C They are effective to the patients for a longer term.
D. It is extremely economical and makes life much easier.
34. Which of the following statements is TRUE
A. The research still has a long way to go.
B. Normal blood transfusions will disappear soon.
C. Ten people have received the lab-grown brand new blood.
第 13 页 共 21 页
D. The brand new blood isn’t fit for those with rare blood types.
35. What is the passage mainly about
A. The test of lab-grown blood. B. Comparison of two
blood transfusions.
C. An appeal for rare blood donation. D. The expense of blood
transfusions.

On a recent flight (航班) from New York to South Carolina, the 6-year-old
girl Lena lost one of her bottom teeth. During the flight, she fell asleep
on the plane, and when she woke up, the tooth was gone.
Their flight from New York to South Carolina was their last flight on a

was and the security was closed. Seeing Lena’s sadness, Captain
