Gie Assignment #2 Compare and contrast classroom learning with online learning

Schools today tend to offer conventional classroom learning and online learning, the

students finding that they are increasingly involved in online learning. Here, conventional

classroom learning refers to the process of learning in which teachers given lectures and

the students listening and take notes while online learning means the learning process in

which the internet was involved. This essay will first discuss their similarities which are the

subjects’ materials; total hours needed and assignments completion / evaluation then

continue to explore their differences which are the flexibility, the mode of learning and the

cost.

First, it’s the curriculum of each subject matter in both learning process which was

designed according to the same criteria settle by educational authorities. That is to say if

you are a student of math, then you need to command exactly the formulas and laws and

be able to use them for solving problems no matter you are learning in classroom or

online.

Another similarity is that the students have to devote exactly the same learning hours for

the same subject; for example, learning a European language (i.e. French), the students

need to practice this language minimum 600 hours to reach B2 level according to the

European language standards. Otherwise, it’s hard to reach that level of fluency.

Furthermore, the assignments from the classroom learning and online learning were

evaluated and graded according to the same requirement. The student’s essay maybe

got a B grade, and this grade cannot be A plus if he chooses to be graded online.

Despite these similarities, these learning processes differ greatly from each other in

several aspects.

On major difference is that while the conventional classroom learning needs the tutor and

students come in person to the same place at the a fixed time, the online learning process

can be conducted at whatever place and whenever people like as long as they get internet

access, (Melinda, 2009). That means that it is more flexible and convenient in comparing

with the classroom learning. ( Rebecca, 2006).

Gie Assignment #2 Compare and contrast classroom learning with online learning

The other difference of the two learning process was the mode of learning, while

classroom learning can be conducted with a blackboard and some chalks. By contrast, the

online learning is demanding in computer skills, they participants need to manipulate

certain software, use internet, use emails even multimedia tools to get involved and

interact with each other in the process. It offered opportunities for intense learning that

outside the confines of the classroom. (Fred , 2012)

Also, the costs are different, for example, students need to commute from home to school,

international students spent even more to participate the classes of a topnotch university

overseas, the cost can greatly reduced if they choose online learning.

By comparing and contrast the two learning process, it’s clear that their differences

outweigh the similarities. It’s hard to say which one is superior to the other; the best way

may be to combine the two effectively for the benefit of people ( Szpunar, 2010).

To sum up, the conventional classroom learning and online learning process share

similarities in aspects such as materials; total time and assignment evaluation but different

in their flexibility; learning mode and cost.
