Friends are very important to us. Sometimes we just want to develop some new

friendships. Here are some of the best apps for you to make new friends.

Atleto

Research shows that exercising with a friend promotes more motivation and healthier

lifestyle habits. Atleto is an app that builds on this “exercise contagion (传染)”

phenomenon by bringing together athletic people to take exercise and organize group

activities. You can choose from over 40 sports and find your community of people who like

to be in a sweat.

Friender

Studies show that we’re eager to find people similar to us. Suppose you’re sick of

boring surface-level conversations. Then ,Friender solves that problem quickly with an

algorithm(算法) that only matches you based on your favorite activities and interests. This

friend-finding app makes it easy to get into conversations that you care about. If you don’t

have many hobbies to type into an app, one of the easiest ways to start is to try out new

hobbies.

PawDate

Dogs are great companions, but sometimes it’s nice to talk to humans, too. This app

connects pet owners to meet up at dog parks or walk with their pups. You get to set up

doggie play dates and find new friends at the same time! It’s a win-win.

Skout

Skout started back in 2007 to help people make new friends. The matches are based

on geographical distances and preferences. It's perfect for meeting people while traveling,

moving and entering a new chapter of life. Skout is able to discover people directly by

checking into a location and seeing who else on the app is there.

21.Who is Atleto intended for?

A .Those who like to walk their dogs.

B .Those who want to play sports together.

C . Those who want to develop new hobbies.

D .Those who like to do community service.

22.What can people do by using Friender?

A .Solve conversation problems. B .Share their favorite activities.

C.Make new friends while traveling. D.Have conversations with like-minded people.

23.Which app can help the user find new friends quickly at a new place?

A .Atleto. B .Friender. C .PawDate. D .Skout.

As a senior school graduate, with COVID- 19 cases rising and lockdown hitting, I’ve

had plenty of concerns. Losing my graduation ceremony was one of them. But being

高三英语 第 3 页 共 12 页

unable to lend a hand to my community at such a terrible time was the greatest concern.

Except for wearing my mask, following the health officials’ guidelines, and assisting

seniors to get their groceries, there wasn’t anything more I could do.

Then it struck me. Solving COVID- 19 relied only on individual steps and the

goodwill of human awareness. But the next challenge we have to deal with ahead is climate

change known as the silent pandemic without a vaccine. So all I could think of was: Why

don’t we do the same for it, and try to deal with global warming through our everyday

activities?

I have decided to take a gap year and created an app to help people reduce carbon

emissions from their shopping and transport activities. Even though I’d never written any

program before, my will was greater than any excuse I could think of. The first version was

just a one-screen app. Through the lockdown, I’ve had only 70 people to test the concept

with and barely created any impact. Plus, the process of leading a social organization

seemed like a small boat in a rough sea to me. But instead of giving up, I chose to fill the

gap. And the coolest thing was that the more I was learning, the more people got interested

in the idea. Through every leadership program, I built a stronger user community where

each person was equally passionate and brave to make a change. Their enthusiasm was my

greatest fuel for innovation.

Today, through the app, over 4,000 people reduced more than 150,000 kg carbon

emissions. The app turned into an international movement. I proved to myself that miracles

really happen when you dare to make a change.

24.What was the author’s greatest concern during COVID- 19?

A .Being unable to help his neighbours. B .Losing the graduation ceremony.

C .Having to stay at home every day. D .Having to wear a mask every day.

25.What can we know about the app from the passage?

A .It is for leading an organization.

B .It is a well-designed one-screen app.

C .It became an instant hit when first invented.

D .It inspires people worldwide to make a change.

26.How can we describe the author?

A .Kind and humorous. B .Determined and creative.

C .Brave and adventurous. D .Friendly and cautious.

27.What would be the best title for the text?

A .Education is the key to success.

B .Ups and downs make one strong.

C .Real changes come from a daring heart.

D .Creativity results from challenging authority.

The whole world knows them: actors, singers, models, athletes and TV personalities.

If I use social media, I get too familiar.

I have nothing against the entertainment industry and celebrities. The problem is that

by idolizing the entertainment industry so much, we sometimes completely forget about the

things that are truly important and that are changing our world. You probably know who

Leonardo DiCaprio is—a very talented American actor and film producer. But then you

probably don’t know who Cori Bargmann is. Bargmann is a scientist who is uncovering the

causes of Alzheimer’s and autism, which have been unknown for years.

What I think is wrong is that DiCaprio’s net worth is $260 million dollars, while

Bargmann’s is less than $l million dollars. DiCaprio is definitely talented and has worked

hard to give us good films, but Bargmann is working for something that can save thousands

of humans who are suffering. And just because our society prefers to idolize the

entertainment industry instead of science, she gets paid much less than she deserves.

But if it would benefit the world to invest all of our time and attention toward

scientists, why don’t we make scientists our new “celebrities”?

First of all, we like being entertained. We love pretty faces and easy-to-digest

information. It’s easier to care about simple stuff rather than scientific, complicated things.

Another reason is that most scientists don’t like being in the spotlight. They’ re mostly

reserved and like to have privacy. They’ re busy people, which explains why they haven’t

attracted the media the same way that performers have. Also, people have free will and the

right to be interested in whatever they want to be.

However, studies have shown that young people are more interested in a scientific

career as a result of COVID- 19. The pandemic has also made known some scientists who

have suddenly started appearing on TV and guiding us on how to get protected from this

deadly virus. Maybe that is the start of the development of a different point of view which

will be in favor of science for future generations.

28.Why does the author mention Leonardo DiCaprio and Cori Bargmann?

A .To give an example. B .To introduce the topic.

C .To offer a definition. D .To propose a solution.

29.Why are scientists not as well-known as actors?

A .Scientists get paid much less than actors.

B .People are busy choosing what they like.

C .Scientists don’t feel like being paid attention to.

D .People prefer entertainment to complex science.

30.What does the word “that” underlined in the last paragraph refer to?

A .Studies make scientists known and accepted by the masses.

高三英语 第 5 页 共 12 页

B .Young people want to change their jobs because of the pandemic.

C .People are attracted to science and scientists during a special time.

D .Most scientists gradually become willing to show up in public light.

31.What’s the author’s attitude toward entertainment stars?

A .Favorable. B .Objective. C .Prejudiced. D .Indifferent.

D

A strong hit to the head will normally give you a concussion (脑震荡). Woodpeckers

(啄木鸟), however, strike their beaks into trees thousands of times a day and are perfectly

fine.

We used to think that a woodpecker’s skull worked as a kind of safety helmet which

absorbed the shocks. A new study by Sam Van Wassenbergh, a researcher at the University

of Antwerp in Belgium, proved that this “common sense” was in fact false.

Van Wassenbergh and his colleagues argued that, if a woodpecker’s head absorbed the

force, it would not be able to strike the tree with enough force.

“If the beak absorbed much of its own impact, the unfortunate bird would have to

pound even harder,” they said in their paper. In other words, if the theory were true, the

woodpecker would have to peck even harder to compensate for both the shock-absorbing

qualities of the sponge-like bone inside its skull as well as the density of the wood.

The scientists recorded four different kinds of woodpeckers in zoos as they were

pecking. The team used data from their high-speed recordings to build digital models of the

woodpeckers. Van Wassenbergh described the woodpeckers’ motion as “a hammer hitting

wood” since their movement appeared rigid and focused.

The research suggested that woodpeckers don’t have any shock-absorbing device or

the ability to reduce the amount of force. Although they are without “helmets”, the team

claimed that the woodpeckers’ tiny size and weight protect them.

A woodpecker’s brain is about 700 times smaller than that of a human. “Smaller

animals can withstand higher decelerations (减速). Think about a fly that hits a window

and then just flies back again,” Van Wassenbergh said. “So that is why even the hardest hits

we observed are not expected to cause any concussion.”

32.What was the “common sense” about woodpeckers?

A. They can withstand slight concussions.

B .Their heads are able to reduce the force.

C .Their beaks can spread the shocks they produce.

D .Their bodies are soft enough to absorb the force.

33.Which can replace the underlined words “compensate for” in paragraph 4?

A .Remove. B .Improve. C .Get rid of D .Make up for.

34.What does Van Wassenbergh’s experiment prove?

高三英语 第 6 页 共 12 页

A .The shock absorber theory is mostly correct.

B .How woodpeckers peck depends on their type.

C .Woodpeckers do not have special safety devices.

D .Density of the wood affects a woodpeckers’ pecking force.

35.Where is this text probably taken from?

A .An advertisement. B .A science magazine.

C .An observation diary. D .An information booklet.

根据短文,从后面的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。其中两项为多余选项。

In many countries of the world people do what is called house-sitting. It means that if

the owners of a house are going away, they want someone to come into their home and

look after the house and maybe pets while they are away.

In Australia, a great many people travel. After people retire, they might buy a van (面

包车) and travel all over the country. 36

So if people want to travel or go away for some reason, they might want someone in

their home to care for it and keep the gardens tidy. House-sitters might have to care for

pets. Also, quite a few people have swimming pools in their back yard and they need

cleaning. 37 I feel it is a great way of seeing the country, because I go and stay in a

new city, get to meet new people, and have time to go sightseeing in a new area.

38 There are plenty of websites where you can find a lot of advertisements by

people who want to travel, and by replying to the advertisement, you can make

arrangements to go and look after their houses.

There are some requirements to be a house-sitter. You must be a trusted person, so

that the house owner knows you will not steal anything. You must be able to go when the

house owner wants you to go, so you need lots of free time. 39 You need to be good

with pets, and able to care for cats and dogs, or other pets they may have.

A number of house-sitting jobs are just for a few days or a couple of weeks while the

house owners have a short holiday. Sometimes they are for much longer. We have had a

house-sitting job for six months, while the home owner traveled to Europe.

40 Then you can travel to many different countries and stay there. One of the

important things is to get references from the house owners for whom you have done

house-sitting. A reference is a written letter to say that you are trustworthy and have

looked after their houses well. You can show these letters to possible house owners and

they know you will do a good job.

A. I have done house-sitting many times.

B. Thousands of people do this all the time.

高三英语 第 7 页 共 12 页

C. It is also possible to do house-sitting in other countries.

D. Generally you have many chances of getting a house-sitting job.

E. You must take a little care over what your description says about you.

F. This is an international house-sitting service for all city and country areas.

G. You must have a good car, so you can travel to different parts of the country.

As is known to all, the current situation of the epidemic is still very

serious, which continuously calls for our close attention. The way we

make joint efforts to fight against it reflects the selfless and fearless

spirit of our nation.

Above all, what is highly advocated is that individuals should wear a

mask so as to better guarantee our safety when exposed to public

places. In addition, it is the devotion of medical personnel and

participation of volunteers that help us overcome the difficulties and

deserve admiration. Most importantly, only by observing the strict

eventually get through this tough period.
