• Data Protector Express Edition (introduced with Data Protector 10.10 (2018.09))

provides socket-based licensing for virtualized environments and includes backup

and recovery of virtual machines.

• Advanced virtualization features such as granular recovery (GRE), power on, live

migrate and zero downtime (ZDB) integrations and software encryption. However, file

system and application integration agents are only available with DP Premium and

not available with DP Express.

• Data Protector Premium Edition (introduced Data Protector 10.10 (2018.09))

is a capacity license based on the amount of front-end data being backed up.

The license covers all features of Data Protector, including file system backup,

application integration, virtualization support, and software encryption.

• Data Protector Express and Premium Edition user interfaces provide

enhanced reporting capabilities to effectively monitor your backup

environment. The Premium Edition has advanced enhanced reporting.

• A starter pack is always necessary and is chosen depending on the operating system.

It includes licenses for:

- A management server (cell manager) for the selected operating system

- An unlimited number of backup agents for all platforms

- A tape drive (SP-AL038 and SP-AL031 contains 1x SP-AK987)

- Libraries with up to 60 slots each

• Additional functionality required, tape drives or libraries with more than 60 slots.

Tape drives distinguish whether they are connected directly to Windows, Linux, or

Netware servers, and without the use of an FC switch, or running on a SAN, UNIX,

or NAS. For details, see DP Practitioner Community.

• You only need to license the number of tape drives that are running at the same time.

Typically, this is the total number of drives for optimal performance.

• The online extension supports the online backup of databases and applications. This license

is also used for the integration of VMware and Hyper-V. All vSphere servers require their

own online extension for Windows / Linux, as well as Hyper-V servers. If databases and

other applications in the virtual machines are to be backed up online, additional online

extension licenses are required. In clustered environments, each node requires a license.

• The Advanced Online Extension supports online backup of MySQL Ent and PostgreSQL

databases. Starting DP 10.90, standard online backup license will work as well for MySQL

Ent and PostgreSQL.

• Granular Recovery Extension enables the recovery of single files from MS Exchange,

MS SharePoint and VMware. The recovery can be performed by the administrator of

the application

• Zero Downtime Backup controls the copying of data within a disk system or over hard

disk systems. As a result, there is only a brief standstill of the application during

backup. Instant Recovery controls accordingly restoring the data. Licensing by the

size of the LUNs to be copied on the primary storage system.

• To run multiple backup cells, the Manager of Managers is not essential, but it improves management by bringing together databases, enabling cross-licensing and cross-library

use. The MoM license is required once per cell.

Advanced Backup to Disk LTU

• Deduplication and backup-to-disk functionality uses the Advanced Backup-to-Disk extension. AB2D replaces the drive and slot licenses otherwise required for the virtual tape

library. Licensed is the "usable native capacity" of the storage system.

• Data Protector is licensed either per capacity (in TB or PB) or per function (Cell

Manager, client, drive, etc.). These licensing models must not be mixed in an

implementation of the software product.

• The required TB and PB values for capacity based licensing are calculated using the

following rules:

- For a complete and incremental backup concept, only full backups are

considered.

- The "always incremental" policy uses a "synthetic", complete concept as the

basis.

- The average size of a single archive log or transaction log backup is added to

the database capacity.

• Capacity-based license includes a License-To-Use (LTU) license for Cell Manager

and Manager of Managers, Tape Drives and Libraries, Online Backup and Granular

Recovery Extensions, Zero Downtime Backup and Instant Recovery, Advanced

Backup to Disk and NDMP.

• Advanced online backup is included in the capacity-based license.

• One LTU is required per TB.

• Example: for data to be backed up of 240 TB, the license SP-AO843 is required 240

times.
