spring festival
the most important festival in china is the spring festival. it is
said that the spring festival evolved from an activity known as
the winter sacrifice. it was a custom practiced by the people of
primitive society. the spring festival marks the beginning of the
chinese lunar new year,so the first meal is rather important.
people usually eat jiaozi or dumplings shaped like a crescent
moon on that special day. as for recreational activities during
the sping festival, the dragon dance and lion dance are
traditionally performed .
one legend goes that the beast nian had a very big mouth that
would swallow a great many people with one bite. people were
very scared.
传说有一个叫“年”的怪兽,有一个大嘴,能一口吞下很多人。人们都很怕它。 the custom of putting up red paper and firing fire-crackers is to scare away nian. 贴红纸和方鞭炮的习俗就是为了吓跑年。
however, people today have long forgotten why they are doing
all this, except that they feel the color and the sound add to the
excitement of the celebration. 但是,现在人们大多忘记了为什么这么做的原因,只是觉得色彩和响声增加了过节的气氛罢了!

the spring festival is also known as the lunar new year or the
chinese new year. it is the most important traditional festival in
china and celebrated in late january or early february. the
historical reason for beginning the year during cold weather is
that it is the time between the autumn harvest and winter
storage and spring plowing and summer other
words, this is the time for rest and relaxation after a years
toil ,and for celebration as well.
in addition to the practical reasons of having the spring
festival during the cold weather,a chinese folklore offers
another explanation. according to chinese legends, a demon
called nian would torment people once a year during the winter
time. so people gathered together to discuss how to deal with
nian. some suggested that the demon was afraid of the red
color, flames and loud noises. so they put paired red couples
on their gates, set off firecrackers and beat gongs and drums
to drive away nian. these acts worked and nian fled, thus, the
customs of celebrating the spring festival were born and
passed down until today.
the eve of the spring festival is a time for the whole family to
get together for a big dinner party. so no matter how far away a
family members is from his home, he will try this best to come
back in time for the family reunion dinner. fish is a must on the
dinner table, as it has the same sound as surplus and whole
family will usually watch the holiday special tv programmes
together. at midnight, people used to set off firecrackers to
bring in the new recent years this custom has been
forbidden in cities because of the fear of causing a fire.
instead , townspeople put on electric firecrackers or red
lanterns. some people also post painting of the door god on
the gates, while some post a big chinese characterfu(blessing)
in an upside down way, meaning the blessing has arrived at
the door.
the spring festival lasts 3 days. on the first day, people put on
their new clothes and shoes and exchange new year greetings
with their neighbours and relatives. they will greet each other
withhappy new year,
wish you a happy and prosperous year children especially like
the spring festival, as they can get lucky money(that means

celebration in china is. normally, it was said to start from the
year end religious ceremony in shang dynasty (1766 bc - 1122
bc). a few said that it started from as early as
emperor yao and shun (~2300 bc). at the beginning, the date
of celebration varies from mid winter to early spring. with the
mature of solar base calendar, emperor wu (157 bc - 87 bc) of
the han dynasty (206 bc - 220) established the first day of the
first month as the beginning of the year, where it remains. the
following is a brief list:
? emperor yao and emperor shun (~ 2300 bc):
small scale new year celebration type of activities. ? shang
dynasty (1766 bc - 1122 bc):
new year celebration started from religious ceremony. ? han

month. crack bamboo appeared. (crack
bamboo will create loud cracking sound when put on fire. it is
believed that the sound can drive away evil.) ? wei dynasty

year. the year looks like ox with lion head and it stays in the
sea. at the night of new years eve, the year will come out to
harm people, animals, and
proprieties. later people found that the year is afraid of red

the chinese new year is the most important of the holidays for
chinese. it is defined to be the first day of the first month
in the traditional chinese calendar. unlike the christian new
year which is based on a solar calendar, the chinese new year
is based on a traditional chinese lunisolar
calendar whose date indicates both the moon phase and the
time of the solar year. a lunar month is around 2 days
shorter than a solar month. in order to catch up with the solar
calendar, an extra month is inserted every few years. this is
why, according to the solar calendar, the chinese new year
falls on a different date each year.
normally, the celebration will start from the new years eve and
will last for around 15 days until the mid of the first month.
before the celebration, people will normally do a complete
cleaning of the house and put on the traditional new year
decoration. family reunion is the most important part of the
chinese new year celebration. the new years eve is the time for
family reunion. following by the reunion, people will normally
visit relatives and friends, doing shopping, watch some
traditional chinese shows, launch some fireworks, and plan for
the coming year. the
celebration will sometimes be highlighted with a religious
ceremony given in honor of heaven, earth, and other gods, as
well as the family ancestors. in modern china, working
professionals will normally have 7 days of holiday including
weekend to celebrate. after the family reunion, some
modern chinese may take the chance to visit some tourist
destinations.

there are thousands of different types of new year crafts in
different part of china. the following is just a list of the most
popular items. upside down fu the most popular chinese new
year crafts are probably the upside down character of fu. fu in

down means coming. so this craft means luck, happiness, and
prosperity is coming. usually the fu is written on a diamond
shape paper with red background. people normally post the fu
on front door or on the wall of the living room.
dui lian
also called antithetical couplet. it is a pair of lines of poetry
usually hand written on red paper and pasted on the front.
the two lines correspond in their metrical length and some
properties of each character, such as meaning and tone. the
ideal for a duilian is to have few words but deep meaning. for
this reason, they use one character per word, as in much
classical chinese.
lantern
the type of lantern used in chinese new year is usually
decorated with red paper shell. some lantern has candles
inside for illustration. most are just made of red paper for
decoration purpose only. in chinese new year, the lantern is
usually hanging in front of the door or inside the house. in
some part of china, lantern is a must for yuan xiao festival
(15th of the first month of the traditional chinese calendar).
year paint

size is at least 3 by 3 feet. normally the year paint is hanged in
the most prominent place of the living room. the most popular
subjects on the paint are mountains, tiger, long living god,
