Unit-1 College life: Challenges and opportunities

Some thoughts from a professor

1 As both a college professor and parent of a college student, this time of year always seems to raise a

variety of thoughts as freshly minted high school graduates head off to their new adventures. In a

couple of weeks, green first-year students will be wandering around campuses everywhere, looking

young and confused.

2 "Where do I find Burdine Hall?" asks the first year looking impossibly young.

3 "It's that building right behind you," I answer with a smile, knowing that I will have this conversation

several times over the next few days.

4 Parents and students are nervous, excited, worried about paying bills, and so on. It's a big transition.

So what do professors think about all of this? I can't speak for all of my colleagues, but I do have a few

suggestions for parents and students heading off to college. First a few thoughts for students:

5 Don't get too stressed out, particularly about grades. The first semester may be a little rough as the

transition to college evolves. AP students, in particular, need to be careful about stressing over grades.

You've been sold a bill of goods if your teachers told you AP classes are just like college classes. They

aren't. College classes are more difficult and much more thorough. If you attend a research university,

you will be studying with the people who write the books and articles and they will be teaching based

upon both their own and others' research. It will be challenging.

6 Don't be frightened by the faculty. Yes, we all have PhD degrees, but we are there to help you learn.

Professors can be busy people. Teaching is only part of our job. At a research university, professors are

expected to have ongoing research programs that require supervision of graduate students and

postdoctoral fellows and we spend a lot of time writing and collecting data. Take advantage of that.

Visit your professors during office hours and find out how you can get involved in their research. Faculty

usually welcome help and want undergraduates to become involved in research. They also really like

talking about their work.

7 Take advantage of the educational opportunity in front of you. You should have fun in college, but

you are there to study and to learn. Use the libraries, faculty, and other resources to get every ounce

you can out of your college.

8 Don't be dominated by anyone, including your parents, in choosing your major. Every year I have one

or two students telling me that Mom and Dad are forcing them to do premed, but they hate it. It's your

life, make of it what you want and find something to study that fascinates you. Besides, if you don't

really want to be a doctor, you probably won't be very good at it and you certainly won't be happy.

9 Don't call your professors by their first names unless they invite you to do so. Write emails with proper

grammar, spelling, and capitalization. First impressions matter and your professors will likely be people

who write your reference letters in the future. Get to know them, but be polite.

10 For parents, here are some things to keep in mind:

11 Leave your kids alone. Let them explore college and let them make mistakes. They will learn from

those mistakes and grow up in the process. Don't hover over them and don't constantly check to make

sure they are doing laundry or that they are studying. Encourage them to do well, but don't stress them

out. Once a student told me his father warned him that anything less than a 3.5 GPA would mean he'd

be financially cut off. This is not a way to support your child as he or she gets accustomed to a new and

different lifestyle and a complicated set of demands.

12 Don't call or email professors if your kid gets a bad grade – most likely he or she deserved the bad

grade and, if not, you need to let your kid work it out with the professor him or herself. Also, just because

your kid got As in high school does not mean the same will happen in college. College is much more

demanding than high school.

13 Finally, both parents and students need to recognize that college is a tremendous opportunity to

spend four years at a place where knowledge is created. Students are exposed to new ideas and their

preconceptions about the world are often challenged deeply. This is good; it is what makes you grow

as a person and more able to deal with the complex world in which we live.

Far from being an obstacle to entrepreneurial success, a college education arms a person with the

set of skills necessary to take advantage of a great idea. At their best, colleges and universities are

themselves hothouses of innovation, a natural site and climate for translating ideas into application. It

is no coincidence that some of the practical ideas that have most changed our world, such as the

lnternet, came directly out of universities and colleges. Nor is it a coincidence that communities of

entrepreneurs, Silicon Valley included, grow up around great universities.

Unit-2 Be yourself, be happy

Stopping "should" shaming— Ending the self-imposed guilt game

1 Unless you are already aware of the damage it causes, you probably say "should" at least a few times

a day. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word "should" expresses obligation or

expectation. The internal message, however, when we say "I should" do something, is inherently negative.

For example, saying "I should go to the gym" means I know I would benefit from going to the gym. What

is implied in the "should" statement is, "but I really don't want to right now" and "I feel guilty about it." If

there wasn't an underlying discord, you would simply say either "I'm going to the gym" (because you

should and you are) or "I'm not going to the gym today" (you're not going and you're OK with that choice).

2 The word "should" indicates that you aren't doing what you would benefit from, and you're not entirely

resolute in your choice, either. Enter regret. Cue the reinforcement of existing negative messages you

already hold about yourself. "This is why I'm still fat," "this is why I don't have the body I want," "I'm not

good enough." Now you feel bad about yourself for not going to the gym, so you pour a glass of drink,

have a comforting snack and turn on the TV to take your mind off feeling bad about yourself. And tomorrow

you will do it again, if not about going to the gym, about something else. Possibly many things.

3 "Should" goes hand in hand with self-reproach. The problem with guilt is that it's largely worthless in

terms of getting you to do anything. You may have been raised in a house where guilt and shame was

used to get you to do all kinds of everyday things, like be nice to your sister, clean your room and go to

church on Sundays. Guilt may feel familiar to you, and humans seek what we know, even if it's bad. But

guilt doesn't get you to do the big things like find a job that makes you happy, leave a relationship that

sucks the life out of you, or manifest your dreams in love, life and the pursuit of happiness.

4 How do you free yourself from "should"?

5 When you hear yourself say "should":

6 Evaluate what you really mean. Do you really mean that you are addressing an obligation or expectation

that is worthwhile for you to do right now? Or is this some old mental model you have in your head about

you, who you "should" be and what you "should" be doing, that maybe isn't worth clinging to?

7 Do it or drop it. If you evaluate the "should" and decide it's worth keeping, then get up and get going.

Drop the "should" and the guilt and just do it. If you evaluate the “should” and you need to let go of the

expectation or obligation, then let it go! Really. Stop feeling bad about yourself over it, which, as you know,

isn't getting you closer to fulfilling it.

8 Find and replace. Now that you've chosen to do it or drop it, replace "should" permanently with more

decisive, positive reinforcers — words that will serve you better than "should." Try "I accomplished," "I

decided," or just simply "I did" or "I didn't." All of those authorize an action, whether you do the task or

not. Statements like "I will" or "I won't" show you have made a decision and agree with it. This ends the

disconnect between where you are and mental images in your head that don't matter.

9 You control your thoughts. Your thoughts create your emotional state. Your emotions direct your

actions. Your actions seek thoughts that reinforce them. It's a circuitous relationship that can be either

very positive or very negative and extremely humbling. The important part is you choose it. You have

chosen to hold every thought you've ever had, even the ones based on what was role modeled for you.

And so you can choose every thought from now on. Negative self-talk and "should" might show up,

baggage in hand, but you can show them the mental exit door. Solidifying your decisions and dealing with

"should" takes practice, but it's work worth doing. You really should stop saying "should." Better yet, just

do it.

some of the Chinese students I have worked with are very sociable, some are not afraid to ask questions,

these people are confident and resolute, they possess the very qualities needed to become lawyers,

who likes to read and observe and incorporate my observations into my writing. I am introverted because

Unit-3 A journey of discovery

Tales of a second grade traveler

1 My mom recently announced she wanted one thing from her three daughters: two hours alone in her

basement, clearing out boxes of childhood detritus that had been there for too long. We rolled our eyes,

but gave in for an afternoon, stuffing high school homecoming dresses into trash bags headed for

Goodwill.

2 My youngest sister faced down a hat box filled with notes from old boyfriends going back to sixth grade

— two kids, a mortgage, and a lifetime ago. Me, I unearthed something far more enlightening: my first

piece of creative writing, penned for Mrs. Miller in the fall of second grade.

3 I knew my mom had the story tucked away somewhere, but hadn't read it in years, and as I unfolded

the single sheet of crumpled notebook paper, I laughed at how little I'd changed. My first literary effort,

"Me and the Puddle Adventure," is a travel tale, written from the point of view of a single raindrop who

longs to leave the confines of suburban Detroit, where my family resided at the time.

4 An economical 188 words, it goes like this:

One day it rained and smack! There I was right at the side of the road. I started out at one drop, then I

got bigger and bigger, and I got so big that I went flowing down the street. I felt filthy but I went on going.

It rained all night and it rained all the next day, and I got so big that I went right out of Michigan and into

Ohio. In Ohio it rained for five days and the next day I went right into Kentucky. I got run over by many

cars in Kentucky. It rained for three days and I went into Tennessee. And I kept on going, thru states and

states and finally I went right into the Atlantic Ocean. It was fun floating on the Atlantic Ocean. At least

I didn't get run over by cars. I stayed in there for three weeks and I landed in England. I was on a dead

end street. I went right to the end of the street and I went down the other side. And right back into the

ocean and I sank.

5 Admittedly, my grasp of narrative was in its formative stages and the ending was a bit of a letdown, but

what's interesting is what drove me to write it.

6 The previous summer, my grandparents had retired to Tennessee, and we'd taken our first family road

I knew exactly why it was there. Mary Poppins, the film, had been re-released that year; my parents had

taken me and my sister to see it. Like masses of other kids, including my nieces and nephews today, we

were attracted by a coal-blackened Dick Van Dyke high-stepping across rooftops and the eccentric old

British naval officer firing a cannon, on the hour, next door to the Bankses' lovely home, thundering, "Ship-shape and Bristol fashion."

have believed it. But re-reading my seven-year-old self as an adult, it's clear a sense of wonder had been

tapped, one that motivated me, decades later, to strike out for new ground.

9 Now I have a better understanding of where my travel bug began: a road trip, a movie, an encouraging

teacher. Despite all of our 21st-century bells and whistles, the same ingredients just might fire a kid's

curiosity today.

10 I did get to London, during my college years, and a couple of times since. There were no chimney

sweeps, alas, but my first view of Hyde Park was glorious. Perhaps a "Puddle Adventure: The

Globalization Years" is in order.

Ultimately, I walked away with this metaphor: A home is like a backpack. Throughout the trials and

the prevailing source of security. lt recorded the steps l took throughout my travels and displayed the

Unit-4 The art of living

Sharing the millennial way

1 While the classic American Dream is to own everything – cars, homes, luxury items and such,

millennials are creating their own version of the American Dream: sharing with access, without

owning.

2 "For some of these millennials, access is more important than ownership – and that's why the 'No

Strings Economy,' also referred to as the Sharing Economy, holds so much appeal. It gives them

access to things they may not have the financial resources to afford otherwise, alternatively it

alleviates them of the burden and responsibility of owning something completely," exclaims Sheryl

Connelly, Global Trends and Futuring Manager at Ford Motor Company.

3 Millennials, born 1980-2000, are a generation 92 million strong. They stand to inherit large amounts

of wealth and will control the spending power in the US for quite some time. This generation has

grown up with immense uncertainty, being witness to the 2008-2009 stock market catastrophe and

partners-in-crime that has wrapped students in debt. These have left lasting reminders for millennials

that owning things might not be the smartest financial decision.

4 According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, in 2013 60% of all

millennials were interested in renting vs. owning all types of goods and services. With the surge of

non-traditional renting options for millennials, everything from cars, to clothing, to music, to vacations,

companies have been working enthusiastically to provide a continuing source of new products and

innovations to meet the millennial needs.

5 Penn Schoen Berland (PSB), an independent research company, conducted a poll on behalf of

Ford Motor Company among 1,000 Generation Z and Generation Y respondents in the US. There

were some surprising results regarding the millennial sharing generation:

· For Gen Y and Gen Z, the sharing economy is above all an opportunity to save money (more than

half say saving money is an advantage to sharing goods and services).

· 1 in 3 millennials are interested in renting out their own stuff as a way to earn extra money.

· Respondents share because it gives them the opportunity to try out new products (40%) and have

access to more options (33%).

· "Rides in a Car" takes No. 2 spot in list of items young Americans are most open to sharing following

books.

6 What does this mean for corporations like Ford? While millennials are certainly still buying cars,

the when and how they use their car is what is changing for this demographic. Between Ford's

GoDrive car-sharing service in London, to their Car Swap and City Driving on-demand service, they

plan to stay current and relevant with the millennial generation offering them exactly what they want

– ownership, access and the ability to share.

7 GoDrive is an on-demand, public car-sharing pilot. The service offers customers flexible, practical

and affordable access to a fleet of cars for one-way journeys with easy parking throughout London.

8 Companies like Uber, Spotify and Airbnb are all recent success stories that also speak to the new

sharing economy. In years past the idea of renting someone's apartment for a vacation stay was

nothing short of a foreign concept to millennials. Airbnb has created an entirely new way of traveling

for millennials, providing access to properties ranging from intimate to exotic all around the world

with competitive pricing that most major hotel chains can't compete against.

9 Millennials have broadened their idea of sharing beyond luxuries like cars and vacations. Rent the

Runway, a popular online retailer offering designer dresses and accessories for rent, has surged to

success among millennial women where luxury designers might have normally been out of their

financial reach.

10 "Not only is Rent the Runway the smart choice of women who value experiences over

possessions, it's also the modern one. In today's sharing economy, our customer gets around the

city via Uber, she listens to her music on Spotify and she uses Airbnb when she travels. We are the

first company to allow her to approach fashion in the same way," states Welington Fonseca, SVP of

Marketing.

11 Millennials' need for sharing is not just about finances, but rather their insatiable desire to refresh

a product or service as fast as they do their social media feeds. Fonseca persists in the belief that

"Rent the Runway's unlimited service is the cure for fast fashion. It offers women a subscription to

fashion, giving them access to designer statement pieces on a rotating basis, so they can augment

their closet staples with quality, desirable pieces."

12 Being 92 million strong, the sharing economy that millennials have created is a trend that is sure

to be long-lasting. With companies like Ford and Rent the Runway already recognizing the

significance of the millennial sharing economy, this proves to be a feasible space for future innovation

and product creation for years to come.

The famous 19th century phrase, "less is more," first noted in an 1855 poem by Robert Browning, is

part of a greater context of ideas we see in society today. Through its interpretation, this phrase has

also made its way to being associated with modern architecture and design, focusing on the

simplicity of style. While the meaning and origins of the phrase are rooted in history, it's the phrase

we are seeing permeate vast arenas of young peoples' lives today. As more young people choose

to call large-scale cities home and brush the ideas of saving for the future to the back burner for the

time being, a series of patterns have emerged.

no student debt. As the only child, they grow up and are supported by their parents to go to college. Many

Chinese families own their own homes, and many do not have mortgages. China's millennials aren't all

that rich, but they can afford luxury goods. That's why Chinese millennials like to spend.
