in terms of the american dream, there are broad sense and

narrow broad sense refers to the equality, freedom,

democracy,while the narrow sense is a kind of believe that as

long as the american people work hard,they will get a better

life.

the term was first used by james truslow adams. in his book

the epic of america ,which was written in 1931,he states: the

american dream is that dream of a land in which life should be

better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for

each according to ability or achievement. it is a difficult dream

for the european upper classes to interpret adequately, and too

many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. it

is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a

dream of social order in which each man and each woman

shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are

innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they

are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or

position.

someone says that the american dream has become the

pursuit of material prosperity - that people work more hours to

get bigger cars, fancier homes, the fruits of prosperity for their

families - but have less time to enjoy their prosperity. others

say that the american dream is beyond the grasp of the

working poor who must work two jobs to insure their family’s

survival. yet others look toward a new american dream with

less focus on financial gain and more emphasis on living a

simple and fulfilling wolfe said, …to every man,

regardless of his birth, his shining, golden opportunity ….the

right to live, to work, to be himself, and to become whatever

thing his manhood and his vision can combine to make him.

on june 7, 2013, during his visit to the united states, president

xi jinping put forward the idea that the chinese dream and the

american dream are mutual. so, what is the american dream?

what elements does the the american dream include? correctly

understanding the american dream helps us to better

understand the china dream and strive to realize this dream.

on september 16, 1620, the mayflower carried 102 passengers

sailing from plymouth, england to create colonies of north

america. on november 11, the

mayfloweranchored in the state of massachusetts

of happiness. it attracted men and women all over the world

came to the united states to achieve their dreams. after the

declaration of independence on the constitution and other

laws for the american dream of the rule of law guarantee, the

rule of law to ensure that everyone has a chance to realize

their dreams, if without a good system of a country, individual

again good dream also difficult to achieve.

in american history, benjamin franklin, mark twain countless

politicians and other social activists, author used the word

presidential campaign in 2008, his a bestselling book the

so many people in the united states, won him many votes.

obama, the african people grew up with his mother, climb the

peak of power through personal efforts , which is an example

of the american dream. humans have a lot of things we can do

each have each dream, some want to be a sports star, some

want to be a film actress, some want to be a scientist, some

want to be doctors, some want to be a worker, some want to be

a farmer, some want to be a businessman, is wants to become

a politician, some will have a dream house have a car in a quiet,

uneventful life. these varied individual dream breeds the

universality of the american dream, that is no matter how you

born, no matter you have any background, as long as you work

hard you can achieve your dream. this just as the american

writer, thomas wolfe (thomas wolfe, 1900-1938) of the american

dream, explains: anyone, no matter how he was born, no

matter he is what kind of social status, more no matter what he

has he shall have the right to live,

have the right to work, have the right to be yourself, have the

right to according to congenital and acquired conditions

become the one you want to be.

the american dream in the pursuit of spiritual rather than the

pursuit of material. american historian james, laszlo adams,

james truslow adams, 1878-1949) in the journal of the american

achieve it. freedom is the way to realize the american dream,

reflects the respect of the american dream of individual

citizens and people-oriented governance

philosophy; everyone can have their own dream, can realize

their dreams in their own ways; no freedom of speech,

freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, freedom of

association, freedom of parades, demonstrations, strikes, such

as freedom, freedom of religious belief, communication

come true. human rights is the content of the american dream,

including the right to life, the right to education, work, the

right of free migration right, the right to vote and be elected,

and criticize the government and the pursuit of

american dream is not, of course, remains the

same, also is not perfect. the united states declared its

explicitly give black men the right to vote until 1870, it was not

until 1920 that states may not be deprived of womans right to

vote. at any time, with the continuous improvement of human

self-awareness, with the progress of human civilization,

peoples pursuit of life style and social patterns are changing.

a famous american black civil rights activist martin luther king

jr. in i have a dream speech, revealed the essence of the

american dream: the dream is in the

constitution, to realize the american dream is the

implementation of the constitution, if made the constitution is

not carried out, it violated the constitution dignity, it is

equivalent to give people leave a blank check, all dreams are

golden millet dream .what is the real driving force behind the

american dream? some historians believe, is the desire and

pursuit for wealth. connecticut state university history

professor matthew warshall said: the pursuit of money, is in

the american dream constant r, precisely

the excessive pursuit of wealth, the

american dream are staling, gradually losing its appeal for

people around the world. warshall wrote in his article who

wants to be a millionaire - change the american dream concept

rich quick. now americas most admired, for example, the ways

american society is gradually losing diligent work motivation.

early european immigrants to the united states believed in

equality of political rights and religious equality. today,

american politics are evolving to

become the game of money. this warshall nor denied: the

bush family in the united states political success is the

success of the oil money. in the field of religion, the internal

advocate freedom is limited to christendom, islam and little

money support, can only be in extreme weak position in the

united agreed that in the changes of the times,

the charm of the american dream for the world may be smaller

and smaller. american hegemony in the world politics and

arbitrary, cause many foreigners to mention the word american

is full of disgust; an anti-terrorism bill blocked many

immigrants into the united states the way; economy of

speculative bubbles make the ordinary people always fear their

wealth, suddenly

one hand, the core focus of american culture is the individual

value, pursuing the democratic freedom and admiring the

competition, clinging to the principle of

rationalism and pragmatism. and most importantly, it

ultimately places emphasis on the self-concentrated

individualism. in another words, american culture takes

strength to the individual strive. the ultimate goal for a

american in his or her life is to

achieve what he or she can get through his or her untiring try.

and now take a look at the so--called american dream. the so-called american dream is originated from the colonial period of

britain. it is a kind of dream which promotes the belief that

people can finally achieve better life if only he or she continues

to try without any kind of difficulties. that is to say, people

must be diligent, brave, and determined enough to step into

success, rather than depend on some kind of social class or

aid from the outside world. to draw a conclusion that american

dream inspires people to work so hard to arrive his or her ideal

destinations within a short life. it can be seen obvious in the

american culture. accordingly, the core of the american culture

is the american dream. illustrate my view, the american public

values the achievement a lot, and most of them honor the hero,

having a deeply worship of the success and hero. the personal

achievement is considered to be one of the most vital

values .the sense to achievement possesses a very special

station in an american’ heart. every american is running after

the success and it means the promising prospect and the

motivation to moving forward. they do believe that the value of

a person is what he or she has got in his or her career. today,

in america, the heroes of the new times are the successful

entrepreneurs, scientists, artists and various kinds of stars.

their personal experiences of how they finally get what they

are pursuing have become the reference of the social cultural

orientation, the lively text books for the american parents to

instruct their children. what all talked about above reveals the

american culture emphasizes the individual strive mostly. and

what can be easily concluded is that the american culture’ core

is american dream. from what have been talked, a conclusion

can be safely drawn that american dream is the core of the

american culture.

abstract

forrest gump won the 67th annual academy in1995. it is not

just a movie. it has become a cultural phenomenon. the movie

is the prevailing social perspective of low iq and involves a

number of historical figures and historical events. it evokes

reflection on history and the hearts of collection of the

american dream. from the “stupid” behavior of forrest gump,

people can see the virtues of kindness, trustworthiness,

seriousness; honesty, courage, loyalty, and many other virtues

and behaviors that americans are advocating now. the spirit of

forrest gump’s independent personality, his free spirit,

strength of character and a realistic attitude towards life, etc. is

a perfect interpretation of the core of american cultural values

of individualism. in this paper, through the analysis of the main

characters of forrest gump, the paper wants to resolve a

concrete manifestation of the american dream. the american

dream is a concentrated expression of american values. it is

rooted in the early development of puritanism after the

founding of the westward movement, disillusionment in the

period of great development of monopoly capitalism. american

dream by different historical events, at different times, has

different content and performance. this paper analyzes the

origin, development of the americans who are pursuing the

american dream. also it analyzes the expression of the

american dream and its positive significance.

摘 要

摘得1995年第67届奥斯卡六项大奖的《阿甘正传》已不仅仅是一部影片,它已成为一种文化现象。影片以一个智商低下的人的视角去看当时的社会,涉及多个历史人物和历史事件,目的是唤起人们对历史的反思和心中珍藏的美国梦。在很多人眼里近乎“愚笨”的阿甘的行为中,人们看到了一种久违的善良、守信、认真;诚实、勇敢、忠诚等诸多美国人所崇尚的美德。阿甘独立的人格、自由的精神、坚强的性格和现实的人生态度等的精神是美国文化价值的核心一个人主义的完美演绎。本文通过分析《阿甘正传》主要人物,来解析其在美国梦中的具体表现。美国梦是美国价值观的集中体现。它根植于早期的清教主义,发展于建国后的西进运动,幻灭于垄断资本主义大发展时期。在不同时期,美国梦受到不同的历史事件的影响,有着不同的内容和表现。本文分析了美国梦的起源,发展以及美国人对于美国梦的肯定及追求,表达了美国梦对美国人的影响和积极意义。

【篇三:《了不起的盖茨比》中的“美国梦” 英文】

american dream in “the great gatsby”

f. scott fitzgerald’s novel, “the great gatsby”, is one of the few

novels he wrote in 1925. the novel takes place during the

1920’s following the 1st world war. it is written about a young

man named nick, from the east he moved to the west to learn

about the bond business. he ends up moving next to a

mysterious man named gatsby who ends up giving him the

lesion of his life.

after the circle love with gatsby and his cousin daisy, gatsby

was killed by the trick of tom. through reading the book, it

shows how the experience of selfness and humanity after

world war 1 that made the high social optimistic over their

lives. it showed how they wanted to forget the past and make

themselves back into their own social class. also, by the

experience of daisy and jordan treatment from the men in the

stories make the reader to see that time didn’t change the

relationship between man and man.

this novel is a great novel to give an example on how reality is

to people even the high social class. through the discussion of

the passage, author wants to show how the path leads to the

“american dream” can turn into a negative or positive outcome

in a person’s life.

gatsby is just a great example of failing to valuing his

materials. he had everything he wanted (except daisy of course)

but he never used or appreciated the materials he was

surrounded by. he didn’t value anything but daisy since the

reason for everything he did was for her. it only leaves to

question to whether he really loved her or wanted her wealth or

maybe just even the accomplishment of having her. for all we

can know daisy could just be trophy toward gatsby and tom

since they never considered her opinion as if she was an

object.

on the other hand, nick chasing his american dream of

learning the bond business through the process he fell for

jordan and was the observer of gatsby’s life, make him to go

back home. in the end, everyone just wants the american

dream but everybody’s definition is different which just

indicates that i’ll never be accomplished. once we accomplish

something, we end up being hungry for another goal.

a big part of the american dream is to love, which seemed to

be gatsby’s main goal. daisy gave him motivation to have the

dream, which

caused him to chase after it. although he reaches as far as he

possibly could, he still couldn’t reach his first target, daisy.

“however, we conclude by reminding ourselves that we

should not think of gatsby as a condemnation of america, but

rather as a warning bell, we can say, as relevant today as when

it was published.”

another thing we need to realize is the incorrect american

values. wealth and class has always been a big component.

daisy is a perfect example of wealth and high class while

gatsby will never leave his lower class, which still continues to

be a problem for his american dream. although he “invented”

himself to be high class, he will never leave the lower class

and get daisy, which makes him fail to get the american dream.

even with tom’s dream, his american dream is never fulfilled

because if he was happy he wouldn’t lie and have a mistress.

no matter the wealth and class, it still won’t help you get your

dream faster. in which this article, perfectly touched the small

details that ended up equaling to my theme.

in a conclusion, the great gatsby was a great book for

everyone, not only for american, but deserves everyone to

have a self-examination. ---how can we have a correct value of

love, wealth and authority? how can we deal of the balance of

them? this book shows what chasing the american dream can

make you do. nick just wanted the american dream but he

found love, hatred and just decided to take the route back

home. gatsby after achieving almost his full american dream

just ended up death. that shows that the american dream is

just a false hope. what attracts us to it is the thrill of

accomplishing that goal but it just strives us to make another

goal. the great gatsby was written to show us our flaws. so we

should all learn from it to be ourselves and never to change for

any cause or anyone.
