B

Sixteen years ago a boy gave me an important gift. It was a smile.

It was the early autumn of my first year at a middle school, and my old school

was far away. As a result, no one knew who I was. I was very lonely, and afraid to speak to

anyone.

Every time I heard the other students talking and laughing, I felt my heart break. I

couldn’t talk with anyone about my problems.

Then one day, when my classmates were talking happily with their friends, I was

sitting at my desk unhappily as usual. At that moment, a boy entered the classroom. I didn’t

know who he was. He passed by me and then turned back. He looked at me, with a smile.

Suddenly, I felt the touch of something bright and friendly. It made me feel happy

and warm. That smile changed my life. I started to talk with other students and made

friends. Day by day, I became closer to everyone in my class. The boy with the lucky smile

has become my best friend now.

One day I asked him why he had smiled, but he couldn’t remember doing so!

It doesn’t matter because all the dark days have gone. I believe that the world is

what you think it is. If you think it is lonely, you might always be alone. So smile at the

world and it will smile back.

24. When did the writer get the gift?

A. At the age of 16. B. After making friends with the boy.

C. After becoming closer to everyone in the class. D. In the first year at a middle

school.

25. Why was the smile an important gift?

A. Because the writer’s old school was far away.

B. Because the writer didn’t know who the boy was.

C. Because the writer felt lonely and had no friends.

D. Because the smile didn’t mean anything to the boy.

26. Why didn’t the writer talk to anyone in her new school about her problems?

A. Because she was always unhappy.

B. Because she didn’t know anyone at the time.

C. Because she was in the first year at the junior high school.

D. Because she didn’t want her parents to worry about her.

C

The Brown Bear

My wife Laura and I were on the beach, with three of our children, taking pictures

of shore birds near our home in Alaska when we spotted a bear. The bear was thin and

small, moving aimlessly.

Just a few minutes later, I heard my daughter shouting, “Dad! The bear is right

behind us!” An agressive bear will usually rush forward to frighten away its enemy but

would suddenly stop at the last minute. This one was silent and its ears pinned back----

the sign of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day. The bear

behaved abnormally, probably because of hunger.

I held my camera tripod (三脚架) in both hands to form a barrier as the bear

rushed into me. Its huge head was against my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck

across its mouth. It bit down and I found myself supporting its weight. I knew I would

not be able to hold it for long.

Even so, this was a fight I had to win: I was all that stood between the bear and my

family, who would stand little chance of running faster than a brown bear.

The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod. I raised my left arm to protect

my face; the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side. My arm could

not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break.

Drawing back my free hand, I struck the bear as hard as I could for five to six

times. The bear opened its mouth and I grasped its fur, trying to push it away. I was

actually wrestling with the bear at this point. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the

fight ended. The bear moved back toward the forest, before returning for another

attack----- The first time I felt panic.

Clearly satisfied that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off, destroying a

fence as it went. My arm was injured, but the outcome for us could hardly have been

better. I’m proud that my family remained clear-headed when panic could have led to a

3

very different outcome.

27. The brown bear got near to the family in order to _____.

A. catch shore birds B. protect the children

C. start an attack D. take away the tripod

28. The bear finally went away after it _____.

A. bit the man B. got injured C. found some food

D. felt safe

29. The underlined word wrestling in Paragraph 6 probably means_____.

A. running B. fighting C. crying D.

hurting

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

If you enjoy drinking cappuccino at coffee shops, you can also make it at home.

First, organize all the things you will need. You’ll need some freshly boiled

coffee, some skimmed milk, and a big cup to put your cappuccino in. You might also

want some sugar, cinnamon(桂皮香料), or chocolate to put on top. 30

The second step is to keep the coffee hot while you make the milk. 31

Otherwise, you might want to put the coffee in a thermos to keep it hot.

The next step is to warm the milk and make it frothy (give it lots of bubbles). You

can warm the milk on the stove, but watch it carefully to be sure that it doesn’t boil over.

32

After you have warmed the milk, you need to beat it until it is frothy. You can

do this by hand with a whisk(搅拌器) or a beater, or you could pour the warm milk into

a blender(搅拌机) and run it on high (give it lots of bubbles) for about 30 seconds.

Now that you have made the milk frothy, you are ready to combine it with the hot

coffee. 33

Finally, you can add sugar, cinnamon, or chocolate to flavor your cappuccino.

34

A. Pour the coffee into cups and pour the milk on top of it.

B. Taste it first to see whether it is delicious.

C. Have these things ready before you do anything else.

D. Drink it and enjoy this coffee treat.

E. Never add too much milk to it.

F. If you made the coffee in an electric coffeepot, keep it turned on.

G. An easier way is to heat it in a microwave for about 1 minute and 30 seconds.

When I was young , I lived in a quiet small town with my mom. My mom was

beautiful and kind but one day she got a contagious(传染的) disease, which was said

to be very serious. I was worried about her , seeing her becoming thinner and paler day

by day. Mother’s Day was coming. I decided to buy mom some flowers to make her

happy. There was only one flower shop in the town-Mr. Rocco’s.

It was time for Mr. Rocco to shut up shop when I hurried into the florist’s (花店).

“Now, what is it that you want?” Mr. Rocco turned to me. “I want the most beautiful

flower you have.” I replied, still breathing hard. “And just how much do you have to

pay for this most beautiful flower?” I held out a wet hand showing a quarter and a dime.

He nodded, thought for a while and then showed me a plant on the counter. “I can give

you this one for 35 cents.” he said. “Aw, no,” I protested, looking desperately at the

poor plant “it looks like a weed(野草)!” About 18 inches high, the plant was in a small

pot covered with faded red paper. “Now trust me, boy — I promise that tomorrow

morning when you get up, you will find your most beautiful flower.” said Mr. Rocco. I

knew him to be a good honest man, so I agreed to take it. I believed what Mr. Rocco

said about the flower and hoped tomorrow morning there would be a nice surprise for

my mom.

It was almost midnight when I arrived home. Mom was seriously sick and using

the front bedroom. I looked in to see if she was asleep, and then quietly tiptoed in and

set the plant on the table beside her bed. I wanted her to be surprised when she woke on

Mother’s Day.
