Stories of Animals Acting Just Like Humans

◆Monkeys do math

If monkeys managed the world, we might stay away from the recent banking

hardship. In an experiment led by Keith Chen at Yale, monkeys showed an

understanding of pricing and planning the money, as well as a wish to stay away from

losses when required to buy food with money.

◆A camel eats breakfast with people

The first time Joe ate with British farmers, he was uninvited. The four-year-old

Bactrian camel stuck his head through their open kitchen window, and emptied a fruit

bowl. Now the couple, who rent out reindeer, camels, goats, and other creatures for

television shows, movies, and photo shoots, set a place at their table for the confident

double-humped creature, where Joe eats grain food and his favorite: bananas on toast.

◆Marmots (土拨鼠) befriend a boy

A mass of marmots in the Austrian Alps has made friends with eight-year-old

Matteo Walch by chance, whose family vacations there in summer. Typically, they

beat their tails, chatter, and whistle to warn other marmots of danger, but with Matteo,

they behave much differently, allowing the boy to feed, pet, and even touch noses with

them. “Watching them makes me feel a connection with nature,” says Matteo. How

My husband and I recently went to Disney World with our three children. We

had a wonderful time. Besides, I experienced something that left a deep impression on

me.

Our children were excited about the attraction where children could drive cars.

They were delighted so I decided to stand beside the track to take pictures of everyone

as they drove past on the track.

As I waited for them to drive by, I noticed a car with a father and his son who

was about 7 years old. They rolled down the hill at the beginning, but suddenly the car

stopped. The young driver looked nervous, “I can’t do it.” His father quietly said,

“Yes, you can.”

“No, I can’t!”

“Yes, you can, son.”

The little guy was almost in tears. “I can’t!” With deep patience, the father

said, “Son, you can do this. I’m going to help you.” A moment later, with the father

helping his son, the two went smoothly(顺利地) on their way down the track.

The scene brought tears to my eyes and it reminded(使想起) me of my dear

father. Just like the little boy’s dad, my father used to say the same words to me.

Every time things got hard or when I experienced setbacks along the way, he would

say,“Michelle, you can do this. I’m going to help you.”

Time and time again the words greatly encouraged me on the journey. I’m aware

that I can’t do things beyond my own power, but the words “Yes, you can” come

beside me and give me wisdom and strength. As I benefited(受益)a lot from them, I

often tell my children never to say “I can’t” easily when they meet something

difficult.

The word “sport” first meant something that people did in their free time. Later

it often meant hunting wild animals and birds. About a hundred years ago the word

was first used for organized games. This is the usual meaning of the word today.

People spend a lot of their time playing football, basketball, tennis and many other

sports. Such people play because they want to. A few people are paid for the sport

they play. These people are called professional sportsmen. They may be athletes for

only a few years, but during that time the best ones can earn a lot of money.

For example, a professional footballer in England earns more than 30,000 dollars

a year. The stars earn a lot more. International golf and tennis champions can make

more than 500,000 dollars a year. Of course, only a few sportsmen can earn as much

money as that. Perhaps the most surprising thing about sportsmen and money is that

the stars can earn more money from advertising than from sports. An advertisement

for sports equipment does not simply say “Buy our things”. It says “Buy the same

shirt and ”. Famous sportsmen can even advertise things like watches and

food. They allow the companies to use their names or a photograph of them and they

are paid for this. Sport is no longer just something for people’s spare time.

Finding fish is going to get harder as climate change continues to heat the world’s

oceans. A new study finds that warming seas over the past 80 years have reduced the

sustainable catch of 80 species of fish and shellfish. The sustainable catch refers to the

amount of some species that can be harvested without doing long-term damage to the

health of populations.

Overfishing has made that decline worse, researchers say. Overfishing refers to

catching so many fish that the size of the population falls. In some parts of the world,

such as the heavily fished Sea of Japan, the decrease is as high as 35 percent. That’s a

loss of more than one in every three fish.

Researchers examined changes in 235 populations of fish and shellfish between

1930 and 2010. Those fish populations spread far apart across 38 ocean regions.

Temperature changes varied from one ocean site to another. But on average over that

time, Earth’s sea-surface temperatures have risen by about half a degree Celsius.

On average, that warming had caused the sustainable catch to drop by 4.1 percent,

the study found. About 8 percent of the fish and shellfish populations the team studied

saw losses as a result of the ocean warming. However, about 4 percent of some

populations increased. That’s because certain species have thrived in warmer waters.

One example is a kind of black sea fish. It lives along the northeastern U.S. coast. As

warming continues, these fish will reproduce faster until they reach their limit.

About 3.2 billion people worldwide rely on seafood as a source of food. That

means it’s urgent for commercial fishing fleets(捕鱼船队) and regulators(监管机构) to

consider how climate change is affecting the health of all of those fish in the sea.

does the new study discover?

shing is to blame for fish’s bad health.

g seas cause fewer fish and shellfish.

d matters to people’s health worldwide.

living regions of fish and shellfish are different.

does the underlined word “thrived” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

A Survived narrowly. eared soon.

sed sharply. ped quickly.

do we know about species of fish and shellfish?

8 percent of them suffered from a great loss.

35 percent of them survived in the Sea of Japan.

3.2 billion people have been saving seafood as it is the source of their food.

80 percent of the fish species have died out because of warming seas in the

past 80 years.

is the text probably from?

Should We Create More National Parks

to Save Endangered Animals?

Don’t you find it worrying that more and more species of animals are in real

danger of becoming extinct? 16 And I think the best way to do this is for

governments to create more national parks.

17 If this environment is destroyed—for example, when farmers clear a

forest for new fields, or trees are cut down to make profits—many animals are unable

to survive, and more species are likely to become extinct.

In addition, national parks protect animals from the danger of being hunted. A

major reason why many species are endangered is that these animals are killed by

hunters. They hunt animals to make money. 18

On the other hand, some people fight the creation of national parks because they

consider it is wrong to interfere with nature. They believe that wild animals are

happier living in their natural environment. 19 They also point out that a few

species are more likely to produce young animals in the wild than in national parks.

All in all, these disadvantages are far less important than the benefits of national

parks. 20 As a matter of fact, they protect animals from their greatest enemies,

that is, human beings.

begin with, animals are important to humans.

hunters even hunt animals simply for sport.

C.I personally believe that we must save these animals.

parks allow animals to live in a safe environment.

y, national parks protect these animals’ natural environment.

say though the animals may face danger, they enjoy a free life.

is a heated discussion about whether to create more national parks.

Air travel makes both people and service dogs very nervous. There are classes

36 people get help to defeat their fear of flying. And there is similar training for

service dogs 37 (suffer) the same problem. You will 38 (frequent) see them

working on buses, trains and other public transport systems. But the busy environment

smooth 41 they need the dogs to remain calm on duty on the airplane. It takes

special training.

The Air Hollywood K9 Flight Center is a school where such help 42 guiding

the disabled can be found. Dog trainers say successful training 43 (base) on a

New Year was just around the corner. I was in second grade then, 7 years old.

One day, on my way home from school, a lady gave me a piece of paper saying that

the neighborhood was asking people to give New Year presents to those who needed

them. When I got home, I showed my mother the paper and said that I wanted to take

part in this plan. My mother thought this was a very good idea and encouraged me to

offer kindness to others less fortunate than us. She said we would become

“Neighborhood Angels (天使)”.

Several days later, my mother said, “Get ready, and we will go.” “Where are

we going?” I asked my mother. “I will drive you to Boots Department Store to buy

something you think would be suitable for a neighborhood present,” she replied. As

we went into the store, my mother gave me $20 to pay for the present. Then she said,

“I’ll see you outside in the car.” She left me alone to do the shopping. I was not

used to buying things on my own, as I had always been with one of my parents before.

Everything seemed very strange and confusing to me, but I carried on. I asked myself

what I should buy and for whom. An idea quickly occurred to me. There was a poor

boy called Ralph who lived in our neighborhood. I used to see him often without a

jacket during the freezing winter months, so I decided, then and there, to buy him a

warm jacket.

I looked at many jackets and eventually chose a heavy blue one. The price was

just within my spending limit. The assistant at the checkout asked, “Is this for

someone?”, as I paid for the jacket happily. I said it was, and she wished me a

Happy New Year. I felt as if I were a real “Neighborhood Angel”.

Paragraph 1:

That evening, my mother helped me pack the jacket in beautiful paper.

Paragraph 2:

My mother and I waited breathlessly for Ralph’s front door to open and finally it

故填that。

此处为“as...”

on依靠 le adj.

Dog owners who have attended the training at the Air Hollywood K9 Flight

School say they now feel much more at ease about future flights.

Dog

One possible version:

Dear John,

Knowing that you are interested in science fiction, I’d like to invite you to see a

film this weekend. The Wandering Earth is being shown these days, whose theme is to

save the earth and protect our common home. Viewers describe it as a breakthrough of

the Chinese film industry and it has received a wide range of good reviews so far.

Shall we go to watch the film if you are available? How about this Saturday

evening? Please contact me at your earliest convenience so that I can book the tickets

in advance.

Looking forward to your reply.

Yours,

Li Hua

第二节

One possible version:

Paragraph 1:

That evening, my mother helped me pack the jacket in beautiful paper. She wrote

“To Ralph”and “From a person who cares about you” on it, after which she

drove me to Ralph’s house in the neighborhood. My mother parked down the street. I

took a deep breath and dashed to his front door. Seeing no other people notice us, I

threw the New Year’s present down on his steps, pressed his door bell and then hid in

the car.

Paragraph 2:

My mother and I waited breathlessly for Ralph’s front door to open and finally it

opened. Out came Ralph. Seeing the jacket, he looked astonished and then called his

mother to come out. After hearing them say “Thanks” loudly, I felt very proud of

what I had done. At that time I decided to be a good person offering kindness forever.

It was on that night that I realized the truth that he who has no kindness in his heart

will never find kindness in someone else.
