When your pen is broken, or you have some leftover food, what do

you do with these things? You will probably throw them all into one bin.

But actually, all of these pieces of trash need to be sorted separately. In

recent years, most Chinese cities have worked hard on it.

Shanghai has worked with Alipay to create a “green account”

service for its residents. Account holders get points by correctly sorting

their garbage. Through the Alipay app, they can exchange the

points for milk, phone cards and other products. The city is asking all of its residents to sort their garbage into

four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry.

Wet waste is known as household waste. “They are things you don’t want but that pigs can eat,”

Guangzhou Daily explained.

Paper, metal, glass and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste. Harmful waste includes

things like medicine, batteries. Finally, any waste that’s not wet, recyclable or harmful will go in the “dry

waste” bin.

Many other Chinese cities are using this method to sort their garbage now, too. For example, Shenzhen

has been sorting its garbage into the same four groups since 2012. Students there also receive waste-sorting

guidebooks that they must study.

China is improving its waste-sorting efforts. There is still a long way to go. But it’s never too late to learn

how to sort your trash properly and protect the environment.

If you don’t sort your garbage, all of them will go to a landfill. These landfills can take up large areas of

ground that could have been used for planting trees or crops.

the United Kingdom. There were wolves and bears, many different kinds of deer and large wild cows. There were

All this has changed, of course. Now the population of the United Kingdom has increased to sixty-five million

already. Three-quarters of Britain is covered with fields, towns or cities. Although 25 percent of land is

countryside, new methods of farming mean that there are fewer birds and small animals living in fields than ever

before. The United Kingdom is one of the few countries in the world that does not have a large wild animal that

eats meat. In Scotland there are only 400 wildcats living in the wild. Some people would like to change things,

however. Some organizations and writers say that Britain needs to become more natural again. (B)They suggest

that trees and plants that grew in the UK before towns and cities were built should be allowed to grow again. They

even say that Britain should help large wild animals which have not lived in the UK return and live wild. They

call this “rewilding”.

planted and there are plans for more — but wild animals? Some people ask if wolves will kill sheep or even

humans. They are also angry that rewilding might mean an end to walking in the hills which so many people enjoy.

So far there are no wolves or bears in Britain’s forests — but soon there might be!
